"Harley" rehomed Aug 2015 due to my age and health.
Wonderful B&G Needs a Home

"Harley" is a 20 year old female. I got her at a few weeks old when all she had were pin feathers. In the beginning I syringe fed her every 2 hours, the every 4 hours, then solid foods. She is a great bird that my wife and I both love.

I am now 60 and have congestive heart failure. Our son and daughter are both in their 30's and do not want "Harley". My wife and I have many bucket list items to check off before I check out.

It breaks my heart, but the right thing to do is find her a good home now instead of waiting until I can no longer care for her.

"Harley" has bonded with my wife and she is "in love" with our bird sitter. So I have no doubt she can be acclamated to a new home.

"Harley" is very intelligent. She has a good vocabulary. She uses inflection and can put short phrases together to get what she wants. She plays peek a boo, waves, dances, blows kisses, and does a magic trick. She has a list of sounds she can mimic and plays guessing games.

"Harley" has no problems. No plucking, no excessive screaming, and no excessive nipping. She loves men but bonds better with women. She is laying eggs and begging for a mate.

She enjoys being around other birds. She is very well adjusted to people and animals. She likes to share food with our small dog. She is not fond of small children. I sense she is jealous of the attention children receive.

Aside from my health issues, we work long hours and she is not getting the attention she deserves. Our bird sitter would love to have her but she
has too many birds now.

We live in Las Vegas. We are not in a hurry. It's not a financial issue. We will only consider a 'perfect' home for "Harley" as she is a very very special, well adjusted one owner B&G. She needs a lot of love and attention. She loves being social with her "flock" especially at meal time.

If you are interested, please respond to this post or IM me. This is like putting my child up for adoption so be prepared for a lot of questions and maybe a few visits to make sure "Harley" will bond. No first timers please. We'd prefer you have experience with large birds. We will also want to visit "Harley's potential new home".

Hello and Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear you are faced with such a difficult decision. Harley sounds like an amazing B&G, I hope you find a wonderful new home for him.

Re: Wonderful B&G Needs a Home

I should also say 'thank you' to this forum and the participating members. I have been reading the Macaw section for about a year looking for advice and learning about others relationships with their macaws. This has helped to determine that there are great bird owners out there and that Harley could find a new home and be very very happy. Great forum.

I'm so very sorry you have to make this heartbreaking decision but it shows a whole lot of courage and love to do what's best for your baby! Might I ask where you hail from? I can absolutely put some feelers out for you and your family.

Re: Wonderful B&G Needs a Home

Las Vegas and SoCal. But willing to travel for the right home. Very important to make sure Harley will bond. I see this as a transition more than a placement.

I know of lots of folks in SoCal and there are a whole bunch of them on this forum as well. Worst case scenario, try talking to The Lily Sanctuary in Fountain Valley. They are a wonderful parrot rescue who just rehomed two very difficult macaws to exceptional homes...I can only imagine what a wonderful home they could find for a sweetheart like Harley! Re: Wonderful B&G Needs a Home

There is a couple that Harley really likes but they are 62-64. Older than me and their kids wouldn't want her. Not fair to Harley.

The great rescue places seem to only have room for true rescue birds which are more in need than Harley.

We love Harley and will patiently wait for a home that she deserves.

We're considering one of the few "free flight aviary" rescues. Harley would really love a mate. Early 20's and she's a bit frisky...lol.

Thanks for your concern.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
If I could take on one more, I'd love too...

But I am kind of at my limit.

If my numbers hit, and I can set up my outdoor flights, and big bird room, you'll be one of the first people I call. :D

I dread the day I have to do this with my flock...

Re: Wonderful B&G Needs a Home

Harley loves attention.
uploadfromtaptalk1433914665153.jpg

She is playful and comfortable on her back.uploadfromtaptalk1433914754204.jpg

She has great markings and keeps her feathers pretty.uploadfromtaptalk1433914861415.jpg

Harley definitely has exceptionally beautiful iridescent blue coloring.uploadfromtaptalk1433915030980.jpg

Her next family really needs to provide this kind of attention daily.

I tried to send a PM, but the system would not allow it. I'm interested in speaking with you regarding Harley. I'm 45, with large bird experience (macaw & cockatoos), but do not have any birds now. I miss having a bird & am looking into an adoption but want to find the right bird. Thank you - Jennifer

Thanks for the post. I sent an email to you. Please tell me more about your living conditions. Where would her cage and perches go? How are the others in your household with birds? GF? Do you work? School? Lots of questions.

I am so sorry you are having to part with your loving pet, but so glad you are making the choice early enough to find the home she deserves. She clearly has been well cared for and what a joy it would be to see that continue. These kinds of posts make me want to jump up and volunteer, but there simply is not a macaw shaped hole in my flock. Best of luck to you, I hope to hear that you have found just the right place.

Thank you for the heartfelt comments. It is a tough decision and I'm afraid I will find something wrong with everyone who wants her. But in my heart...I will know when it's right.

I am adopting two Eclectus tomorrow, and the previous owner is in a somewhat similar situation. Unfortunately her birds need a lot of work, but she loves them dearly and was able to find just the right fit for each one of her large flock (over 20 birds ranging from lovebirds to cockatoos and macaws). Have you reached out to parrot clubs in your area? I know our club does a lot of rescue ad rehoming, but many of us are waiting for JUUUUUUUST the right bird, that special one; perhaps Harley is the missing family member of one of your local parrot people?
