Blue and Gold needs a new home

It is with a heavy heart that I have made the decision to re-home my Blue and Gold, Buddy.

Buddy was originally my father in-law's for approximately 10-15 years, until this past December when he went into the hospital and passed away shortly after. I have been taking care of him since, as he's bonded to me, and is either indifferent or hostile to all other members of the family. Although I've grown very fond of him, and love the little guy, I'm not available nearly enough to be his sole caregiver. It's simply not fair to him.

That said, as I've become a bird mama with no prep or notice, I'm even more in the dark about how to go about finding a loving home for Buddy. I'm hoping the bird lovers on this forum can help with that.

We are located in the GTA, Ontario, Canada. Buddy is a male 10 to 20 (most likely closer to 20) Blue and Gold Macaw. Sadly we don't know much more than that for sure.

What I've learned from being his mama over the last 7 months is he is the standard toddler...

He loves attention when he wants it, and will let you know when he wants to be left alone. His wings are not clipped, but I'm fairly sure he does not know how to fly; at least he has never attempted, and does the occasional nose dive rather than gliding to the ground. I have taken him into the backyard, and he wanders around, generally following me wherever I go. He also has no problem being held under the shower when it's bath time. Late in the evening, he loves to sit on your lap and have his lower back rubbed.

He needs A LOT of training...that sadly I didn't know how to give. For the most part my late father in-law ignored him while watching tv or playing video games. Buddy was mostly left to entertain himself on top of his cage. He was wary of all visitors and would generally scream if someone came near his cage. His cage was not cleaned for a VERY long time. When I took over his care, began feeding him, cleaning his cage, leaving little fresh treats in his food dish, and just sitting with him, he became much more friendly and happy. That said, he either does not understand, or chooses not to acknowledge basic commands like "step up". He does grumble and mumble a few recognizable words like "Buddy Bird".

I'm looking to find him a stable home, with someone who not only has, but is willing and wants to put the time into caring and training Buddy for the long haul. The little guy deserves that.

I sincerely hope someone here can help guide me to the best place/person.

Thanks for reading,
Amber

Hi Amber,

I'm also in the GTA and would be happy to help you via some of my own contacts. If Buddy is still needing a new home let me know and we can get emails going!

Amanda

Re: Blue and Gold needs a new home

Have you looked into the parrot rescues near you? Many of them are great at finding potential homes, or at least assisting you in the process of finding a loving home. Most rescues also don't recommend shipping the bird because you don't have the ability to do a home visit and see the living conditions the new owner would provide.

I would shoot some of them an e-mail and maybe get their suggestions on how to best go about finding an excellent loving home for Buddy. I can't imagine it will be too difficult considering that he sounds very well loved.

This bird is in Canada! That would require going through US quarantine procedures... I wouldn't subject a bird to that if i didn't absolutely have to!
