After months of deliberation, my wife (_LB) and I have decided to find a new home for Piper, our two year old male Blue Throated Macaw. Piper is blast to be around. He is definitely a people bird. He likes going for walks and hanging out outside, either on his t-stand or walking in the grass and gardens. His favorite household chore is definitely folding laundry. He lets out a shriek of delight as we toss socks at him and yell ālook outā, then proceeds to throw them on the floor. Job well done, Piper. He also rolls over on his back and will try to catch the socks as we toss them, a game thatās fun for both of us. He is definitely a āboyā at heart, and likes to play rough. Even when we play rough, heās super gentle. He will beak our fingers and let out growls and shrieks of delight, but never bites. After heās settled down, he is very mellow and gentle. He likes to sit on our laps as we surf the web, and either preen or just observe. After of course heās tried to bite the computer and has to be reminded thatās not his toy.
He gets along with all people, and does not have any preferences for either males or females. He has had limited exposure with other birds, but he is highly adaptable and I believe would enjoy having other parrots as company. He is current on all his yearly vet checks and has a clean bill of health.
He is a pretty well trained boy. He does not wander on the floor. He gets along with other animals (dogs and cats), and he travels well in his carrier. He is not a picky eater. He loves fruits and veggies (corn, bananas, grapes, peas, beans are his favorites). He also LOVES Harrisons. Heāll almost always eat that before any other dry food offered.
Now for why we are looking for a new home for Piper. Times have changed since we have gotten Piper, and we are not able to provide him the attention that he needs. Since then, weāve gotten a new house and along with that the slew of projects that comes, longer commute, jobs are busier, and we are expecting our first child. Itās already a struggle finding the time for him, and itās not going to get easier. The truth is, Piper needs a LOT of attention. We have him out of the cage for about an hour every morning, and around 2 hours in the evenings during weekdays. Weekends heās out whenever we are in the house. When he is out, he does best with constant attention. He will play by himself, some days for hours and some days only a few minutes before he wants one-on one interaction. Itās hard to get anything done when he is out, because he needs that interaction, and we find ourselves not being able to keep up, and itās not fair to him. Weāve tried to make it work, rearranging schedules, scheduling around him, dedicated one on one, and itās just not enough.
The ideal family for Piper will have large bird experience, potentially other large parrots, and the ability give Piper at least 3 or 4 hours of attention on a daily basis. We will want to meet this family and see how they interact with Piper, and get to know them to determine if this move would be in Piperās best interest. Piper lives in the Minneapolis area, and he will not be shipped. We are not in a hurry, and are not motivated by money. We just want whatās best for Piper.
Along with Piper weāre offering everything that he has, including cage, toys, perches, stands, bottlebrush, etc. His cage is huge ā Kingās Cage XL at 70ā high x 64ā wide x 32ā deep. You can take these or leave these, or pick and choose.
We are truly hoping to find a loving family that can provide Piper with a great home. Below are some pictures of Piper. Please let us know if you are interested or have any questions.
