Blue and Gold Macaw 19 years old
Dear All,

It is with a heavy heart that I make this post. I have had a blue and gold Macaw since I was 15 years old. She is now 19 years old and she is an amazing well behaved and loved bird. My mother was diagnosed with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis in an advanced stage. It has been controlled for the past two years but has been irritated in the past month. I have been reluctant to give up my bird because she is a member of my family but its come to the point where I have no choice but to give her up for my mom's sake.

Here is a little more information about Pikachu. I have lived with Pikachu since she was 6 months old. She is very calm and sweet. She was able to acclimate very well when I got married. She and my husband never became friends but they respect each other. She does not scream or bite him so I know she has good self control. She was even patient when my son was born. Now he is 3 and they have a little jealousy going but even when he gets close and grabs her she does not bite him. I think all those things make her very unique. Pikachu also lived with cats and dogs all her life and she never had any issues with either of them. The dog and cat just seemed to respect her. Pikachu lives with her cage door open but rarely ventures far beyond her cage. She is fairly neat and does not throw food unnecessarily. She enjoys regular showers and likes to just sit around you while you work or read.

I would like to continue to be a part of Pikachu's life so I am looking for someone in New York and maybe in the Queens Area willing to allow me to visit. Thank you all.

Kind regards,

Vanessa :blue1:

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this. Is there any chance you could place her in a sanctuary (different than a rescue) until life calms down?

Hi Silver Sage, I looked into a local rescue. They were absolutely wonderful people but my bird is not used to all the noise. I was looking for a long term foster situation but have not had any success. I really don't want to give her up but I can't keep risking my mom. Even Pikachu would not want that. She loves my mom very much. I am hoping to stay in her life. Thank you for your post.

I wish I could help. I'm in Hawaii, and my home is not a good fit for a macaw, but my heart breaks for all of you.

There are some other bird forums with more people in the New York area, and maybe one of those could help. I don't know if there are local bird clubs, but I would expect yes in a city that size. You might check with specialty bird stores and breeders, not to see if they will take her but to find out about other organizations. The right person is surely out there. In fact, you might find that after rehoming her, your mom's allergies don't improve, which might mean she isn't a trigger after all and could come home. Please do come back and give us updates on how it goes.

Thank you for the suggestion Kentukienne. I think I will head to the specialty stores. I do know a few so perhaps they will give me better leads.

So Sorry to hear you need to rehome your sweet girl! I'd love to help you place her if you are still in need of a forever home. I have a rescued military macaw and an African grey. I've had birds in my life since age 7 and I'm now 29! The african grey's previous owners had actually flown her from Florida to live with me! I keep them in contact as to how she is doing in our home.. give them updates/photos. The down fall is that I live in PA.. but if you would like to contact me. I'd love to learn more about pikachu and feel free to ask me any questions. I see we both are junior members so I am not able to pm you myself. Can an admin help me contact ? Hope to hear from you soon!

I can rehome her,
My dad owns this house so its good, i've always wanted a blue and gold Macaw, and can kindly and whole heatedly take care of her. I would be honored to take care of her. Question, any way you could add a cage?

When you say re-home, but want to stay in Pikacho's life, you mean fostering her out . I live on Long Island. But how long are we talking about fostering?

Hi my name is Phil Harper and I live in Summerdale AL where I have a Ceramic and Pottery Studio.

I have spent most of the past ten years in the country of Panama where I raised many wild parrots that were brought to me by people who could no longer care for them or found them in the wild as youngsters. I left Panama with a sad heart as I am unable to bring any of my birds with me to the USA. I am fortunate that my ex mother in law asked to keep the "kids" and they are happy with her and I get photos often. My favorites were the Amazons that I hand feed from about three weeks and are now over nine years old.

I have raised birds since I was 15 years old and for a time breed and showed domestic show pigeons and was an officer in the National Pigeon Assn and Junior Coordinator for six years.

I am looking for a bird I can care for and spend time with me in the studio where it will be able to see kids and have a good life. I understand the commitment it takes to be a caregiver of a large bird, especially one that has behavioral or physical problems. I think it would be selfish of myself to buy a "perfect" parrot when there are birds out there that can benefit from my experience and love for parrots.

I realize my location is far from you and is not desirable. I promise photos, videos and could set up a Facebook page for you to keep up with your baby. I honestly know how hard this is. I can give you references here and in Panama of my character and ability to care for birds.

thanks for your time
Phil Harper

Hi - I am located in Brooklyn. I have fostered Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons, Cockatiels. People leave me animals as I will not turn away anyone. My CAG died last year due to a stroke. She was a rescue off craigslist where she lived in a filthy cage and was only fed nuts and had no toys. She was the best - loved to feed my dogs and would follow me around the house and sit with me when I am working. I have been thinking about adopting a bird for a while. I am very interested. Please let me know.

thank you.

Sorry to say but this member has not posted for over a year. There may be rescues in your area that have macaws available -- there are lots that need homes!

Remember that macaws are huge, and with their big size comes a big appetite for both toys and food! Expect to spend around $200 a month on just toys and food for a macaw, not including a huge cage, cleaning supplies, vet check, play stand, and that will be for 40+ years! Just something to think about :)

Yeah, I remember this thread. The minute that several people in Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, and PA offered to foster her bird, she never posted again. Either she found a foster, rehomed the bird entirely, or just decided to keep her.
