So me and the wife have been talking about getting an African gray. The problem is, living in Maine, there's really no where that I can find that I can get one without buying off of a breeder knowing nothing about them or there birds, or having to drive to a shelter 6 hours away, for multiple visits before we can adopt. It's not that we wouldn't be willing if it came down to it, but just seems kind of impractical. Anyone got any advice? This isn't something we're planning on rushing into either, right now is strictly figuring out the game plan and doing LOTS of research. May not even end up with a gray, just seems compatible with what we want. Thank you!

Well there is a lot you can learn about breeders if you dig. I would suggest contacting the breeders near you and asking questions. You might also let them know you are willing to consider an older bird. I'm a breeder and I often end up rescuing and fostering parrots particularly in the species I work with regularly. In fact this week I had a conversation where a woman I know wanted one of my Ringneck babies, but instead she will be adopting a Ringneck rescue from me.

Don't settle for breeders who are stingy with info though; if they are hiding things there is a reason.

Thank you for replying. I've been looking for local breeders online but there's so many sites that just end up putting me to breeders in Florida and California that are willing to ship lol, found one site that has a single Maine breeder for grays. Fingers crossed!

Let us know! A lot of members here have had experiences with many breeders and may have dealt with this particular one before :)

Have you looked into Seymour's Bird Refuge in Saco? I don't know where you live in regards to them, but I thought I would mention it!

I have the same problem in Ny .When I was looking for rehomes I did Craigslist. When I wanted a certain species I went through a breeder that shipped .I did this 3 times and everything went great .Dont be afraid of shipping.Bestbirds in Florida is who I would recommend.Hes this Australian guy .Whatever his method is it's impressive. My bird came well socialized (loves my family).Had a great appetite right off the bat.I might even look into amazon with him .Im not having great luck around here. So give him a call

Hey thanks for getting back to me! Been crazy busy lately with spring cleaning. I have not looked into seymours tho, and I hadn't looked into shipping either as I kept finding sketchy ads that I assumed were scammed whenever I looked up breeders near me(I'd get maybe 2 that looked legitimate then 30 that wanted like 200$ for a CAG or macaw and would ship where ever) so I was a little hesitant about that route but i may have to look into that!

Thats $200/$300 is a scam, I suggest you read this thread

http://www.parrotforums.com/adoptions-re-homing/67706-how-identify-parrot-scam.html

and also try BirdBreeders.com - Bird Breeders Directory of Availability and Parrot Breeders not all of them are bad. Most of the are willing to talk and share their experience with you, those who won't stay away from them.

you can certainly African Queens..yes I know thats what people call her, she is in FL and well-known breeder for African Grey and Jardine.

African Queen Aviaries

This is Christy, in NC I spoke with her few times; you can e-mail and call her. She would love to talk and give you advice, and you might end up buying from her. She moved to NC from Richmond, VA.

Birdie Brains Aviary

As always, I suggest you do more research and see what is best for you.
