I need a better life for this bird that I do dearly love. She deserves more then I'm able to give.
So the scoop on my bird MoMo is her name and she is older. I got her 20 years ago and she was 40 then, so I was told. I'm happy to get a vet check her health. She talks but not like a Gray and yells. She will allow you to pet her as she gets to know you but she acts like she will bite you if you try to pick her up. I was told the previous owner could pick her up but I was so young when I got her, it scared me. Unfortunately I didn't have the knowledge to own a bird like this. I have her cage open almost everyday and she will get on top and do her thing but she doesn't leave the cage.
I want someone wonderful who has the time to make her life wonderful and give her the attention she deserves. Teach her things and show her lots of love.
I just don't have the time or knowledge unfortunately.
Reply to this post if interested but I can't respond to private messages just yet b/c I'm new to site.

Where are you? An older parrot is a good companion for older parronts ... there's a good chance they can stay the rest of their lives with one person.

I have long worked with older Amazons that needed new homes. The vast majority have been very ill and near all abuse. So, I can say that with a little effort and a few changes, you will be surprised just how possible it is for this Amazon to once again, become the love of your life.

If you are at least a little bit interested in that possibility, there are members here that will be happy to provide a bit of guidance and support, which just may lead to you and your Amazon, first recalling, and then rejoicing in the memories of why you came together in the first place.

20 years is a very long time and life has a way of allowing us to forget just how much we mean to each other. You will be surprised just how little time and effort is needed to once again become the center of each others lives.

If that is an interest, let us know.

B&G Macaw, Galah, 5 cockatiels, 50 billion and a half budgies. We breed and do rescue. Too many to list each individual's name and age etc, but they are each individuals and loved dearly.
Where are you located? I may be interested. I have had 2 Blue-Fronted Amazons in the past: both were rescues, one was a senior and the other came with significant behavior issues. I am hesitant to take another senior bird as it shattered my heart to pieces when I lost my Crayon girl. But she was an amazing bird and seniors can be fantastic and ultimately completely worth the extra care they may need. I am in the Greater Washington DC area and absolutely would post updates on her if she ended up coming here.

Do you mean give me the knowledge to work with her? Hold her? The yelling with young babies is a problem for me though.

Hmm. If transportation cannot be arranged but you are not in a rush to rehome her, I may be able to come to you in a few months. The area we are looking at to build the(and of course assuming that you do decide you want to rehome her) farm is in Kentucky, not too far from there.

Sent from phone and I can already tell this one was not written well, but I am being climbed on by two small parrots atm so cannot edit from phone also lol

So, in the next five years the babies with not be yelling with the Amazon and life will have moved onto yet another stage! The good news is the Human Babies grow-up and will leave on their own. At that point, the house will be much emptier. Your Amazon may just fill that emptiness.

Your choice is to make adjustments as life changes or re-home! I'm only offering. If you're not interested. That's your choice. That all said, there are members that as babies where watched-over by Amazons and have their own today.

Are you talking about the parrot screaming? That behavior can be reduced or eliminated with time and work too.

yes gracebowen I am talking about screaming :) love her just not that part at all. b/c when it's nap time and she starts screaming it doesn't work. especially with a newborn. can you fill me in on how to reduce that or eliminate it. I would love to know even if I still decide to re-home her. I appreciate your time very much.

bug_n_flock yes should we decide it is best I'm open to anything. transport or waiting a couple of months, i'm not in immediate rush. I do want to figure the best and should that be with someone else I want to make sure that the person taking her is genuine and the best fit. How do you transport a bird? Do you have a gym for her size to climb on? or have room for that, I've wanted to get her one for a long time.?.
Her cage is welcome to go with her, no problem or if you have a better one for her that is great too.
do you think you want to take on another parrot? One that might need some work? I would hope someone could get her to the point where they could hold her.

for the time being until either you can curb the screaming naturally try to keep bird and baby as fa from each other with doors shut between them during nap time.

I get it's hard with a screaming bird wanting attention setting off the baby and beginning a literal screaming match.

Will take time but whenever your Zon is making quieter noises like cooing, and clucking and stuff give her attention then. When she screams just carry on doing stuff trying your hardest not to react to her (easier said than done)

Another idea to diminish noise for the meantime would be to put door sweep things on the doors and insulation foam tape stuff around the doors, they're both relatively cheap and should be easy enough to pick up from a hardware store. My apartment has the foam tape around the doors and it works wonders. Lastly you can order sound proofing foam tiles off amazon relatively cheap/ Not the prettiest thing no but speaking from experience setting up a music studio at my uncle's they do the job pretty darn well.

Best of luck to you!

It might be a good idea to start a new thread in the "amazon" subform about the screaming you are experiencing. If you can offer more details, like when the bird screams, what kind of changes have happened recently to the home (parrots can be very sensitive), is the new baby cutting into the amount of attention the bird gets, being a senior has your bird been to an avian vet recently to rule out a medical reason for screaming (such as arthritis or something causing pain)? Parrots scream for many reasons, so as much detail as possible will help us "diagnose" the reason she's screaming and how to tackle that specific kind of screaming:)

P.S. I grew up in a house with 3 parrots. My mom said as a baby, I slept through the night much earlier than most babies because there was always so much noise and activity in the house during the day, so there might actually be some benefit for everyone to having a loud bird if the baby sleeps through the night sooner;) Oh, and (with close supervision), my moms DYH used to sit on my crib and watch me from the day I got brought home from the hospital. She spent hours every day with me from newborn until I left home, she thought I was her baby. Your amazon may feel maternal and/or simply left out of the fuss the new baby is creating. Just saying;)

I do not currently have a gym that size. Crayon, the senior, was mobility challenged so she could not use one easily. Heshe, my first Amazon, had all kinds of wonderful toys and accessories, but he still has his things. It is a small reassurance to me that at least he has that. I had to abandon him coming up on 5 years ago when I was escaping from a hostile domestic situation....

I you can find a way to make everything work out for MoMo and your family, that would be the best possible outcome, though I am still here as a backup. :)

I am very much a DIY-er, and so is my... companion? I don't know what to call him. We don't really use labels, but are starting the farm together. None of our critters want for anything, especially if making the thing would be a fun project. So basically, MoMo would have a wonderful gym before even getting here if we end up adopting her. :)

And don't worry- this companion is nothing like the one that was so terrible to me when I was younger. He is a wonderful person and is as critter crazy as I am. :) :)

As far as transport, we will be driving out to Kentucky to look at properties before we settle on one to buy, so could possibly stop by for a meet and greet on one of the trips and (again assuming you want to go the rehoming route) either bring her back with us, or pop over and pick her up once we have relocated there ourselves.

Some people ship birds, I never have. However, I am an "old pro" at birds on roadtrips. Heshe used to love going on road trips because his voice echoed in his travel carrier. He would sing and dance till he made himself dizzy from too much dancing in a moving car. Silly critter would get suuuper excited any time the carrier came out.

A fan or other white noise may also block the sound.

Still can't find the post I'm looking for but you can do a search for screaming

In your first post, am I understanding correctly? You have had this Amazon for 20 years, she was 40 when you got here, so she's 60 now? And in all this time, you haven't been able to pick her up and handle her?

Kentuckienne, that is correct granted it haven't personally had her the whole time but she has been within my family. I was young and living in apartments which was not a good fit so my mom kept her for me for years, she has a African Gray. but Yes we could not hold her b/c she attempts to bite. I tried for a while then stopped trying, noone else ever gave it a try. She gets petted and loved on, her head rubbed but never picked up. Her cage is open all day and she climbs around and on top. that is the scoop.
