I’m not sure if this thread goes here but I think it does, sorry if I’m wrong. Recently at a bird store I frequent, a parront had left their Umbrella Cockatoo to be boarded at the store. It has been two months going on three that the Umbrella has been left there, the owners came back home last month and still haven’t claimed their bird.

The owner of the store says that she calles the owner everyday and all the owner says is “Oh we will come pick him up today” then never does. It has been almost two weeks of the owner of the store calling the parronts and the parronts say the same thing over and over again. The poor Umbrella is starting to pluck because he is stressed and the store owner can’t do anything about it because the owner keeps saying they will come but never do.

I’m starting to think the owners of the bird dont want him anymore. He perks up when he sees me and runs over just to greet me, I noticed he doesnt do it to anyone else but me. He will run and scream “Hello” at me and when I leave he yells for me to come back. I cant stand seeing him in pain and stress, I really want to offer to take him home. I’ll pay his boarding fee and everything but I don’t think the store owner can give him to me. I want the store owner to warn the parronts that their baby is now plucking but it just seems like the parronts dont care no more about their baby

weird... Either despicable people dumping the bird on someone else or there's a legitimate reason for them not picking her up. If I were the store owner I would threaten legal action to clear up the bill that is owed. Hard situation because all the legal documents are with the owners so to give the cockatoo to anyone else would be illegal. I'd talk to the owner about it, see if there are any animal neglect laws that can be used, the fact she's begun plucking could be used in this case if worded right to say that the owner's neglect is causing harm to the bird.

Of course the owner of the store legally can get the bird's owners as the more time the bird is there the more money is spent caring for them. Also not picking the bird up is breaking contract. If possible maybe try to record the phone call (make sure the person on the other end of the line is informed they're being recorded) when they say they will be in that day they've then made a recorded verbal contract which in most places can be used in court

Thank-you for caring about this Too!

Each State has a different method of dealing with Abandonment of Property Laws. In addition, the Store should have a Contract that each Party Signs that define the Conditions as part of 'Boarding' (storing) the Too (Property).

Once the stipulated time has past, the Too (Property) becomes the Property of the Store. Commonly, there are specific Written Notice(s), the Store must provide the Owner of the Too (Property). Then based on Local Law, and with time, the Transfer of Ownership occurs.

If I understand you correctly, you are a Third Party (without Legal Interest) in all of this and all you can really do is to inquire to the Pet Store Owner, when those timelines run their course. Unless, you are an employee of the Store and have been directed by the Store Owner, you can not Legally provide or look for a new home.

If you are interested in the Too. Please understand that the Owner retains some Rights, but with each day past the specific timeline, this Rights fade rapidly. For this reason, most Parrots in this type of position will commonly be assigned to a registered Rehomer /Rescue organization.

Can the store forward your number to the owners to discuss the issue? Maybe best for all. Good on you for wanting to take him in x

I am a third party. There is not much I can do but I have inquired to the Bird Shop Owner that I would be available to take the bird home if a rehome is needed. Thankfully I got a text last night from the store owner saying that he will be filing legal action if the family does not come and take the bird within the next week. The family that left the bird there left no toys or anything for him to keep occupied so I might go and buy him a toy today.

I’m sorry if it seemed like I was advertising the bird. I’m not trying to find him a home I just want something to be done because I’ve been frequenting that shop since mid november and he was scheduled to be picked up December 7 and nothing has happened. I dont know what the case is with the owners of the bird but wouldn’t you think if something is wrong they would call the shop and notify them about everything? I mean my birds are like my kids, if I cant pick them up right away I’m going to call the babysitter and explain why I’m late and make sure they take extra care of my babies. I would leave toys and treats for my birds as well. The store owner has said that there is no contact between them or the bird owner besides reminding the owner to pick up the bird and the owner of the bird saying “Okay we’ll do it today.” and never show.

It kinda just baffles me that someone would just leave their bird without toys and when the due date comes along to pick up the bird they are weeks late. This Umbrella is so friendly and it pains me to see him hurting himself because he is stressed. I try to go there as many days as I can to be with him and give him as much company as possible. It just makes me sad and angry at the same time. If the owners are actually really good owners at home props to them but you cant just board a bird and not have toys or something to keep them occupied.

Aww, I feel so sad for this umbrella. Yes, it may baffle you (and me) but some people just don't see these wonderful creatures as their kids, they see them as something to take care of and feed...they see just an animal, not a part of the family. So I can see why, but it doesn't make it any better for this poor bird. I'm glad the pet store owner is taking legal action, so hopefully he can get 'custody' of the bird and then he can find a new home that will actually treat him with the respect and love he deserves.

Good for you for taking the initiative to help this guy out. Poor baby!

Careful, your kind heart is showing. :D

The sad part is that the World has too many of that kind of people!

With 30 days now past, timelines are quickly ending. And, if you have a real interest in this Too. This would be the time to begin have very serious discussion with the Store Owner. Although, it is not yet time to provide money of any kind or amount. It is clearly time to talk about it. The Shop Owner has specific costs that need to be covered, etc.

If you have not Spend many hours reading the Too Forum here, please do that at this point, and before you commit to this Parrot.

Thank-you for being a kind person!

To update everyone. The store owner had said that the owner of the bird was going to come today but I don’t believe it. Although I need to have a little hope that maybe, just maybe the owners will care enough to pick up their baby.

Hmmm, I wonder why USA Laws seem so very similar to the Laws of the Crown??? I believe we had been fairly well connected until some Tea Party and a bit of a war, or something a long that line. :D

The owners of the bird did not come and pick him up today. :(
I made it clear to the owner of the store that if the owner of the bird decides to not pick him up I will pay the boarding fee if needed. Right now the store owner has gotten in contact with someone who told him to warn the family that if they do not come and pick up the bird he will have no choice but to rehome the bird for its safety and health.

The store should contact animal control and report the bird abandoned. The bird will likely be considered a "stray" for whatever the stray hold time is in your county (starting when it is reported, not when he was really left there), then the bird will be free to be re-homed if the owners don't reclaim him during the stray time.

I have to update this thread. Today I went to the store, once again the cockatoo is still there which angers me. I asked for the owner’s phone number and contacted them and they didnt answer so i left them text messages.

I watched the cockatoo peck feathers out and start bleeding. I bought him toys today and I got angry at the bird store owner for not following through with filing legal action. I spent almost three hours with that cockatoo today which i try to do everyday. The fact that he is now pecking to the point he’s bleeding it is very urgent that he gets out of there and I keep telling the owner of the store that but he’s not listening to me.

There is an update. The owners of the Too came the very next day i had texted them that their bird was beginning to peck out his feathers and bleeding. The store owner was open for maybe a week after that, apparently the owner could not afford to keep the place open any longer and thats why he wanted me to rush the owners to come get their Too. I have no clue where any of the birds went that were in that store but I am so very glad that the birds I did get from him are in my home and not some other.

I tried contacting the owner of the store private cell number because there was a half moon conure that he wanted to literally get rid of and it was bleeding last time I saw it but unfortunately he never answered and his cell is no longer taking calls or text messages. My family thinks the owner might have moved away.

you'll probably find the owner had a lot of debt with his bank and he just bailed out without paying any of the debts and is now set up shop somewhere else. I've seen similar things happen over here with pubs and other such small businesses. Just one day they take everything they can and run.

Should have billed the owner for your "muscle" services ;)

I should’ve but I’m honestly starting to hope I don’t see that guy ever again. I took Echo to get groomed yesterday, his nails needed a trimming so I took him to Omars Exotic Birds because the owner of the shop called Canary World is no longer there and because of that I don’t have free grooming, that’s alright I trust Omars to do the grooming properly just like I trusted the man from Canary world. They took Echo out of the crate, recommended some vitamins that I could give Echo that helps their feathers grow back and I spoke to my avian vet about it over the phone and she agreed to try it. Anyways, the groomers at Omars found out that Echo’s wings were cut too short. The man at Canary world had cut Echo’s wings into the coverts, that is way too high and could have caused Echo to start bleeding if the man had cut any further. I was furious.
