Hi Jacob, welcome to the community...

I live in State College, so about 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours away from you...I don't know if you're aware of this, but you live near literally the largest breeder/hand-raiser of parrots in Pennsylvania, and actually one of the largest in the US. They have a place in Scranton and then another in Hazleton, it's run by two women and their employees, and they breed and hand-raise many of their babies, as well as buying them from outside breeders. They pretty much have every species of parrot at some point during each year, and if they don't have what you're looking for they can get it for you. I know a lot of people who have purchased baby parrots from them, some from across the country and had them shipped, and the only complaints I've heard about them is that they are extremely expensive, depending on what type of bird you're looking for, and that they are a mass bird retailer, and they really are...But I can tell you that there aren't a lot of options in PA for private bird breeders, and these guys actually sell hand-raised babies to a lot of people in PA who are the ones who actually advertise and sell them, like a "Broker".

Other than that, there are very, very few Avian Rescues in PA to adopt birds from, but there is one near you, and if you go to www.findapet.com and search for "birds" or "other animals", they post the parrots they have that need a home. I point these guys out because with most Avian Rescues, you have to live within a 1-2 hour drive from them to adopt from them, and these guys are right in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.

Other than that, if you're looking for a baby bird, your best bet is to go onto www.birdbreeders.com or www.birdsnext.com and search for the specific species you're looking for. There are a lot of private breeders and dedicated bird pet stores/bird shops who breed their own babies all throughout New Jersey, so if you're willing to drive a couple of hours you can find a lot over the border, which isn't that far from you. I drove first to Reading for one of my birds, then to Long Island, then to Harrisburg (only an hour or so from me), and finally to Raleigh, NC for my Senegal. There are NO bird breeders at all near me, not from central PA west, there's nothing...

What are you looking for? Are you looking to adopt/rescue, or do you want to buy a baby parrot?

Welcome!

I think that all of us here would hope you prepare and learn a lot before taking the feathered plunge.

This is a great place to start! I'm glad you're open to input.

Do not think of a parrot as a dog or cat. Your feathered "friend" may hate you for weeks and they will still need care and time out of the cage it. If you have researched, then ignore this, but PLEEEEEEAAAASE know that depending on the bird, you are looking at a bigger commitment than you would be if you decided to adopt a human toddler.
