hello, i just made this account so im a bit new apologies, I have a serious question, i bought a 2 month old alexandrine parrot yesterday. I would just like to know what the best way to feed him/her is. I will be using a syringe with a pipe attached, but do i give it a little from the side of its beak, is that how its done? i do have african greys but i did not get them at a young age. Since it is young i am worried, how do i know if it is sick or needs something? thank you so much!

G'day PeaceWithParrots! I'm responding because I don't want you to think no one's noticing your post. Although I've got two Alexandrines, I've never had a baby one and have no idea how to help you. Most of the other Alex-owning members who come to mind have also got adult birds. If you'll be patient, perhaps one of our other experienced breeders/weaners can chime in and offer advice to you. If you don't get a response within a day or two, ask again in this thread. In the meanwhile, I'll try to find an answer for you.

I don't ever recommend anyone getting baby birds without understand on how to feed to begin with. You can easily aspirate baby birds and other issues can happen. Without you knowing what to look for it's not easy for me to explain on the problems you may have. But at his/her age it is less likely to happen but you just never know. It all depends on your husbandry skills cause you MUST keep all the feeding utensils clean and the baby area clean as well. The ammonia from their waste can make them have respiratory infections.

Did you not have the breeder/or whomever you bought the baby from show you how it is done? Yes you can feed from a syringe from the side of the beak but you have to be real careful when they pump their beak as you can hurt them from doing so. Another method to feed is by spoon feeding. Watch some YouTube videos is the best thing I can tell you to do. There's a ton of videos on there to show you how it is done.

I had no idea how common this is!! I just assumed that MOST breeders (at least in the US) who sell hand fed birds, sell them AFTER they're weaned, and won't sell to inexperienced hand feeders. I see after reading many posts such as this, that it is not the case. That really surprised me.

Hi.

I have a question about my baby boy. We only bought our Alex a week ago today and he sees to have adjusted really well. The only thing that's getting me a bit confused is, why he always wants to be on top of his cage... We will play with him and take him outside to walk around in the grass and soak up some sun. But he just flies (well tries to, his wings are clipped) back to his cage every single time. Is there anything we can do to get him to WANT to spend some time with us, rather than him having to?
