Guess the gender

Hey guys,

We haven't had our bird sexed, but the lady that hand raises them gets 50% DNA checked and guesses the rest.
We also haven't really got around to getting it checked.


It's a year old, and just out of interest I'm asking everyone to guess the gender to help back up the sex that we think is ours. (And it's a bit of fun as well as a guessing game)

I don't think you can tell from looking. The breeder I got Forrest from is usually pretty right on with sex of bird. She feels their pelvic area and I guess goes by their bone structure in that area. She is actually pretty good at figuring it out.

I have no reason for it but I say female!

How old is your bird? You either have a young bird or a female
Alexandrine's once they reach adulthood are dimorphic, the males have bright feathers with a pitch black ring around their neck and a pale pink patch at their nape, I also believe that their tales are longer.
While the females remain duller in colour, may have a slight shadow of a ring (but never a full black ring) and are smaller than males.
So if you know how old your bird is then you know you have a girl, or you will have to wait till your bird is 2 - 3 years old and sexually matured

Google them! The males are gorgeous! And the females have such beautiful, sweet little faces. Did you also know that Alexandrine's are named after Alexander the Great? Who started importing them as gifts etc. for noblemen, back then having exotic birds, was a sign of being rich and important.
Sorry I just read that you said your bird was a year old! It looks like you might have to play the waiting game!
Bert is nearly a year old (I know for sure that he is a boy) and he has a really dark shadow for his ring but no adult feathers yet. And in my own personal experience the males tend to be big sooky mumma's boys
Have you thought of any names yet? He/she is gorgeous by the way!

Well most people have guessed the same as what our breeder has said, that it's a male.
Apparently the males have a slightly flatter head and wider stance.
His name is Monty and he's got such a cool personality. He doesn't really talk yet but he does a few household noises and a crow call.
So yea.. fingers crossed that over the next year "he" will get a nice vivid ring =D

Does he sit higher up in his cage or lower? Males sit higher up in there cage than a female, I have a 20 year old alexandrine he has two perches up high and one low one, He has never gone to his low one. Males don't sit low because of there long tail.

He sits high, but I've heard that all parrots will try get as high as they can in their cage (like they would do in a tree I guess)

I'll guess a young male

With very few exceptions, parrots are sexually monomorphic. This means that you cannot determine the gender of the bird by looking at it. We cannot determine the gender easily so we need to have them a DNA for analysis or surgical sexing that requires to put an anesthesia.
