Nino
Hi all, I am new here. We recently bought an Alexandrine (Nino). He is only 17 months old and has adjusted quite well in our household. He has just recently began squawking, it almost seems just for attention. If we are out of the room, or in the room and not paying attention to him, he starts. He spends alot of time outside his cage, has alot of interaction with us, loves baths, is very chatty, likes sitting with us on our deck. We give him lots of attention. The squawking is very high pitched and quite quickly becomes annoying. Any thoughts how to deter Nino from this sort of behavior?

They do that for attention or if they're bored (and yes, they get bored very quickly) basically you either need to give them attention or keep them busy with toys. I use almonds or walnuts in the shell. Usually the won't be able to open the almonds on their own, so after they get bored of the almond, put a little crack in the shell and they'll spend another 20 Mins opening it.
Also another handy treat is mixed natural nuts from the parrot rescue centre, its like natural gum nuts and different pods for them to chew

Don't take him out, when he squawking... if you do it'll positively reinforce the bird to keep on doing it...

Lots of foot toys, foraging toys, natural perches etc. Max loves leather toys... lol

Max is never loud, but I got him as a baby and taught him to entertain himself. He's starting to talk a lot, and is constantly practising. His favourite foods are his fruit and vegetables... He spends at least half an hour eating and sorting through his fresh foods, when they are first served.

Thank you both for your quick response. I will get him more toys, to try and keep him a little more challenged and occupied. As well some treats might be in order. I did not have this issue with my last Alexandrine but all birds are different. Once again, thank you
