Worried about my Alexandrines

Hi, I'm new from Australia and was wondering if anyone has attempted to breed their Alexs? I've had my female for over 5 years old. She came to me from a rescue so I believe she is at least 6 or 7. My male is 4 he is also from a rescue.

I never set out with the intention of breeding them but they get along great and at the beginning of the year we decided to room them together. They started doing the deed so we make them a breeding box. Now my female is at the vet as she hasn't dropped her first egg yet and is egg bound.

I'm wondering if this was a big mistake? Should we have let them breed or am I putting my female too much at risk? At the moment I'm having some big regrets.

Some advice please.....

Personally , I only adopt birds as pets. I wouldn't reccomend breeding pet birds as you become attached to them and they might not make it while laying the eggs becoming eggbound or for some birds just having the stress for caring for chicks can make them sick. If you want to breed birds don't become too attached to them.

If a hen is interested in laying eggs, there's nothing you can do to stop her. You can try and discourage her, but a hen who's adamant about laying is going to lay regardless of what you do to try and stop her.

What is her diet like? Is she flighted or clipped? What kind of cage is she in?

In terms of "letting nature take it's course" I think you did what was best for them, it probably would be cruel to leave them to be too sexually frustrated if they are interested in each other (from what I've read, females get really nippy and agitated if they get sexually frustrated).
If sadly she doesn't make it from being egg bound or stressed, it wouldn't at all be your fault for breeding them, but yes , it'll be Sad for you and the other bird.
