Hi everyone,
Just wondering what a suitable cage size is for a hand reared Alexandrine being housed inside?, and also their dietary needs.
Cheers, Mike.

I would say a 32" x 23" cage, if not larger. Change in to cm.

Diet would prob be best pellet based with sprouted seeds, some dry seeds, small amount of fruits, plenty of vegetables, some healthy grains and legumes plus the occasional cooked eggs.

i agree with monicamc, any bird should have a pellet diet and a tad bit of seed(with out much sunflower seeds). you should also give pletty of fruits and vegetables:) fresh clean water:) make shoure to cover cage at night:) what colour are you getting???

I like blue, but will probably get a green Alex seeing there are not much blues that I've seen her in south aus.

Don't know if it makes a difference to you, but the majority, if not all, alexandrine mutations in Australia are hybrids.

proud mum to baby Alexandrine parrot Midori (Dori), 6 cats - Rosie, Ralphie, Rebel, Rocky, Rahni and Mooska, 2 dogs - Bronson the golden lab and Harley the golden retriever and now 7 mice!
i have a green one and i love their colouring! are you planning on having your alex out alot or in the cage most of the time? i was just thinking that a larger one - i read somewhere its better to have a wider cage than tall as its easier for the alexs to move around, if your bird would be in it alot. i have a smaller one inside, but my alex is only 5 weeks old atm. i plan to get a larger on like a small aviary to put on the back deck, so he can go out in that during the day when its good weather. good luck with your colour choice, sex and name - very exciting for you :)

He/She (preferably a he) will be out of the cage a lot.

My Alex, Vino has a quite large cage (there are pics of it on my profile). They need to have a fairly tall one because of their long tail feathers and where cages are concerned - bigger is always better! I am saving for an even larger one than she has now.

As for diet - Vino gets zupreem fruit blend pellets, a bean mixture, some brown rice and a corn and peas mixture in her bowl daily as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables (blueberries, apples and banana are some of her favourites) and she gets almonds and sunflower seeds as treats... I'm happy to send you my recipe for the bean mixture if you like :)

Hope that helps! good luck with your baby!!!!

Greens aren't necessarily pure either... A lot of breeders are hybridizing Alexandrines to Indian Ringnecks to get color mutations. If a hybrid offspring doesn't fit the goal they are going for, or maybe it's not the right color, that bird might end up in the pet market and sold as an Alexandrine. After x-amount of generations, some of these hybrids are considered pure because they look quite similar to the pure species.//i You would have to do your research.

Hybrids can make great pets as well, I'm just mentioning it in case you have something against hybrids. If you don't have anything against them, it wont matter if your bird is pure or not!

Vino's Bean Mix:

1/4 cup each of:
lentils
navy beans
pinto beans
soya beans
black eyed peas

put in a large pot, cover with cold water and soak overnight. In the morning - rinse, fill the pot with fresh water and boil for 30-40 minutes until beans are soft. Drain. I like to add some organic virgin coconut oil (just enough to coat the beans very lightly). spoon into small tupperware containers (I use the small ziplock ones that hold approx 1cup) and freeze. Each container should have enough for about a week in it, this usually makes enough for 5 or 6 weeks.

Each morning she gets 1 heaping teaspoon each of the bean mix, rice, peas/corn (i buy the frozen ones and thaw enough for about a week) and about 1/4 cup of zupreem pellets in her food bowl.

Yes, my bird eats better than I do!

Breeders choice seeds do a really good soaked seed and sprouting seed that we use everyday.

We started out with a smallish cage but then soon realized how big they grow and their tail too, our current cage is 650cm x 900cm and its only just big enough for him to freely move. He's only in the cage at night and about 4 hours a day while we're out. But I wouldn't go anything smaller.

Hybrid alex / ringneck parrots are really hard to come by in Australia. I'm sure you won't end up with one. They generally don't hybridize them much over here, from what I've seen. Most breeders are pure breeding Alex's for their bigger size and they stick to ringnecks for colours

Thanks Every one. If I don't come by any Alexandrines, Galah's are my 2nd choice. Just a question... how do cockies and galahs get beak and feather?
Cheers, Mike.
