Alexandrine noises

Hey everybody, I've had my Alexandrine, Tango, for almost a year now. He's the only bird i've ever really met and I was curious what noises other people's alex parrots make. Tango's 'flock call' is basically a two-note whistle that he makes when he feels left out of what's going on in the house or if he wants to come out of his cage. Is that a normal flock call or did he learn that from us?

Re: Alexandrine noises

I've heard Nimbus do one call today at the vet, and it was a cry kind of like an eagle... not sure how to describe it, she has an angry noise too if we rub a feather wrong
My two conures have learnt all of their sounds from us or the rainbow lorikeets that are always flying by, their alarm call is their own.
And they're the noises I get, I'm not sure about your Alex as mine hardly makes any noise! (yet)

Re: Alexandrine noises

I have only had Ozzie my alex for 5 weeks, he makes this screaming sound when he is very happy and excited. It's really hard to describe, but it kind of sound like a eagle. He also makes a whole lot of other weird sound, which I have no idea where he learnt that from. Lol. I did hear him said hello today, but it wasn't clear, he is only learning to talk. When he is angry, he makes this low 'are' sound. It's really hard to describe what it really sound like, but you know what I mean. Lol

Hmmm, my Alex doesn't seem to do a call per say, but he makes an awful lot of chattering sounds (trying to talk) and what sounds like laughing...good luck!

Re: Alexandrine noises

Right, to divest a loving bird would be a terrible mistake. try and teach your bird some new noises. Try whistling a lot and it can replace the annoying screech as their go-to noise when they want something.

Does he have enough to keep himself entertained in his cage? I'm dealing with Nimbus being a bit of a noise machine, she gets anxious if she can't see people so I've moved her to the lounge area so she sees people most of the time and that kind of helps, I also talk to her a lot more really quietly and praise her little noises!

Re: Alexandrine noises

I've found the Beaks do rather better if I have the radio playing quietly in the kitchen for them. Other times, all I hear is the word 'Hello' uttered in every tone of voice there is. It gets kinda funny sometimes. Like when Madge clambered onto the front of Dominic's cage, bid him a cheery 'Hello' and barefacedly stole his carrot stick right out from under his beak! Or the time Barney sidled up to my coffee cup, did his little courtship ritual to it, pinned his eyes at it and said 'Hello-oo-oo' in a sleazy kind of way. Or the time Barney sat on my head and looked down over my eyebrows at me, said 'Hello' in the most affectionate tone and nearly managed to fly off with my glasses! They're little toads, these Big Green Budgies!

Re: Alexandrine noises

Our Diesel is 11 months now and running rampant with sounds.

I think its because we have an open plan house and he can see and hear everything that's going on. His cage sits midway between the lounge and the kitchen, and when we are all in the kitchen and he is on his cage, he makes a loud squeaky squawk which we think is his 'flock call' to us. He only does it at this time...we ignore it as we are trying to encourage his talking. When he breaks into 'Hullo how are yooooooouuuu!!!' we reward him with talking back and attention, no matter what we are doing.

He now says 'Peekaboo' (learnt pretty quickly after watching my daughter jump out from behind doors and call it at him!) also 'Good Boyyyyy' and 'Deeezlee weeeezle weeeeeeeeeeezle', and 'Hop up' Again I think because these were all said with enthusiasm at him, usually when we are walking in the front door.

It seems that he learns things faster when we are exuberant and upbeat with him. I thought at first this enthusiasm might scare him, but he seems to just love it.

He does have a loud Cockatoo-like squaaaaawk which he does sometimes repetitively, also, I think when we are not paying him enough attention. Again we ignore this....and hey presto, slowly it seems to be disappearing...

I think the trick for us is slowly-slowly, reinforce the good, ignore the bad and lots of love and attention....oh yeah, not forgetting the endless stream of destructible fun toys and good food.
