Is it just mine, or are all Alexes the most awful food thieves?

Yesterday, I had the Beakies out in the kitchen as usual. They had been doing their usual laps of the hallway, had their bath, been blow-dried and were parked, as usual, on their playgym where they preen for a few minutes before catching a nap.

Since they were so nicely settled and I was feeling a tad peckish, I decided to make myself a health-giving cheese and chutney sanger (that's Australian for 'sandwich'). I took bread, marge, cheese and chutney from the fridge and immediately wore a shrieking green hat for my trouble. Both Beakies know perfectly well that many wonderful food items live in the strange, cold, white room. I might have known the green hat would descend as soon as I attempted to open it!

LOL! So, I continued making my sanger. By the time the bread was buttered, there was no crust left: greedy Beakies had seized it and wrestled it away from the bread! By the time the chutney was on, there were perforations in the bread! By the time the cheese was on, I was actually wrestling for possession of my sandwich with first Madge and then Barney. They worked like a tag team to get that darned sanger out of my hands and into their beaks!

At one point, I was shooshing Barney away from the sanger in one direction when Madge actually descended on it from behind me and tried to make off with it in her talons! I had had only a few bites, but after Madgie had done her little dance on my food with her birdie feets, suddenly I didn't want the sanger any more. Roxanne (the dog) got it.

It is honestly impossible to consume any kind of food or beverage when the Beaks are at large. They go into a feeding frenzy and will stop at absolutely nothing in their efforts to get a piece of the tucker for themselves. So, is it just me or do everyone's Alexes do the same thing???

Wow. Sounds like an afternoon by the beach fighting the seagulls to eat your fish n chips! I would never give up my cheese and chutney sarnie! Those are my favourite as well :)

Diesel is just learning to get 'bolshy' and knows he can muscle in on pretty much anything you're eating. We give him morsels of what we're having in his bowl when we eat, so he at least gives us a head start!!! I'll bet if he had a buddy they'd be double trouble though! :propeller:propeller

Sounds like you need to put a little fridge in your bedroom or take the makings in there, if you want to enjoy your treats ! ! !

I know the feeling:( You prepare a delicious meal or snack, and end up sharing it (by force, if necessary) with the feathered one(s). To add insult to injury, it usually goes cold, gets mauled or stomped upon before the rude creature is finished with it. I think most parrots are little more than brightly colored seagulls:) I know we haven't had a meal in piece in years:52: Perhaps the next sandwich you make, it'll be "nap time" for your cute beakies;) This does beg the question though, are there photos of this "attack" on your lunch:D

(I don't know about your beaks, but Kiwi is large enough to simply dominate rather large trays and bowls of food:31:)

@Selestine: I like vintage or extra tasty cheese and ordinary fruit chutney from the supermarket. I have a friend who makes the most unbelievably exotic chutneys out of peaches and apricots and damsons (and I love eating them too!), but I don't have it in me to make my own. :D

@April: That's a great pic of Kiwi! Isn't he pretty? I have a very soft spot for green birdies and your Kiwi is about as green as they come! :)

Yes, the Beakies certainly dominate everything they approach! They're not so much destructive as enthusiastic - y'know? I can almost hear their thought processes as they strafe my sandwich-wielding hand:

Barney:

G'day Mum! Wotcha got there, Mum? A sanger? Ooo - look it's a sanger! Give us bit, Mum! Go on! Give us a bit, give us a bit! I only wanna beakful - look (takes large chomp out of food) I'b odly godda liddle bit yub yub yub. Madge, geddoutta the way (PECK) Mum said I can go first, didn'tcha Mum? Sanger's mine. MINE, Madge! (PECK PECK PECK)

Madge:

You big longhaired green budgie! Move your sorry tail or I'll bite it in half! That sanger is MINE (lands on sanger with both feet and takes a full clawful with each foot). See? 's'mine! I'm gonna (flapflapflap) take it up to the pantry and you can pull your head in! Wassamatter Mum? I c'n havabittasanga can't I? (SQUAWK) Barney, if you don't move that sorry arse of yours I'm so gonna chomp you! (CHOMP) (SQUAWK) (flies off with large hunk of sandwich in claws and lands triumphantly on top of pantry) See? I'b godda lot bore sagga thad you god - yub yub yub - thanks, Mum!

... and so on. It is literally impossible to sit down when the Beaks are abroad because they're just so full of inquiry and discovery. I wouldn't have them any other way! :D :D :D

Trish, yet another hilariously funny tale about your beloved beaks. Thank you for the special treat.

April, Kiwi is just beautiful! So he's a bit of a thief, but how can you say no when he is so intent on having your snack? Oh wait, I see you just grabbed your camera and told him to enjoy.

LOL! Madge beats up a lottle on poor Barney! She absolutely rules the roost, even though he's considerably bigger than she is. She only has to look at him and he'll retreat (unless there's food involved of course). I can't wait to see how they work things out once they reach maturity (which will be sometime in the coming year). Should be interesting... :22_yikes:

Loved your Tale of Two Beaks, Trish! Lol!

If ever I find myself in Australia, you'll have to treat me to one of you cheese and chutney sangers! (Sigh. Haven't eaten since breakfast and you just reminded me of how hungry I am. Lol)

GAH! This is basically the story of my life. Echo wants EVERYTHING my family or i eat and he takes it a step further where he will just cling to the front of the collar of my shirt ( right in front of my mouth) and as soon as i bring food up to my mouth, hes right there in the way opening his beak and if i doge him and put it in my mouth he will wait in front of my mouth and when he has the chance he will actually try to take it out of my mouth. The horrors....

Lol your dialogue is hilarious, Betrisher! I have no business being in this part of the forum but I was roaming. I think that's exactly what a parrot would say! You should teach them to say that, so you know when to prepare for tug of war!!
