My 5 weeks old Alexandrine parrot swollowed plastic tube.

I have 2 alex baby parrots. I am hand feeding them. About an hour ago, when they were taking their food, one of them suddenly swollowed the tube that is attached to the syringe. The tube is about 2 cm long. I tried searching tube around him. But I couldn't find. I am pretty sure he swollowed it. Its night here and no vet is open now. I am so depressed. And don't know what to do.

Please pray for him. He is just a baby.

As soon as your avian vet opens, take him there, so him can perform a crop flush, and hopefully he'll be able to retrieve the tube.

Unfortunately I cannot answer your first question.

I pray that he does, and I pray that the tube doesn't enter his digestive tract.

As long as it stays in the crop, it 'should' be a rather simple procedure to flush it out and retrieve it.

Please tell me one more question. If in case, I am unable to take him to the vet for about 7,8 hours and meanwhile, his crop is all empty. And he is starving. Do I need to give him some food? And when his crop is empty, can I feel that tube over there with my hands?

Careful feeling around. It's easy to perforate a crop!

If you give him food with the tube in his crop, I would think you risk impaction, or asphyxiation, or possibly perforation.

If you wait too long to get him to the vet, and he doesn't get it flushed out of there...

This needs to happen ASAP.

And I HATE those little tubes, this is actually a fairly common problem with those things, and they don't tell you that... This happens more often than you think. I would switch to a syringe without the little tube.

Hmmmm. You are right. I won't touch his crop. And I am not gonna use syringe with tube anymore. Rather I'll use spoon. My mother is so comfortable feeding them with spoon.

I will take him to the vet as soon as possible.

I'm like your mom,, I much prefer a bent spoon. I'm very old school. But you can't overfill the crop with a bent spoon. It goes down the right hole, and there are no parts that fall off a spoon...

I NEVER use those to be things for exactly this reason. The baby gets excited knocks it lose and this happens...

With the little birds you use the smaller syringes, or a spoon...

For tiny birds like budgies and cockatiels, especially when pulled very young, you need a canula, but I use the kind that screws on. For larger beaks like an Alex, there is no reason for the tiny end, and a larger syringe tip or spoon is much safer.

Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately, we don't have any Avain vet in our city. So, I took him to the pet doctor and he tried to get that tube out of his crop. But he did not succeed. So, he said. That this baby is all ok. You just need to wait. When he'll grow up and will be more powerful, then he'll extrude himself.
So, I came back and he is now all okay. He behaves l:ke a normal baby parrot. I am a bit satisfied now.

I have another alex baby parrot. He is 4 days younger than the one who swallowed tube. Actually he is not mine. He is my friend's parrot. She is having her final exams so, she gave me until her exams finished.

So, last day. I felt that this baby is a bit slow. And today I realised that he is having constipation. I gave him the food. And after 2 hours I saw that he vomited all the food. I don't know what to do now.

Please help!

The baby that swallowed the tube is not going to pass it. It will either stay in the crop causing an infection or go into the digestive tract and cause a blockage and infection! This is a serious issue and no matter how far you have to drive this baby needs to see an avian vet.

As for the other baby I am sorry if this sounds harsh but it is clear you don't know how to properly hand feed babies. Vomiting up the formula is another VERY serious issue. I would encourage you to find an experienced person to take over feeding and weaning these babies after they have been seen by a qualified vet to address the problems you have already caused. Hand feeding is not an easy process and these babies lives are in your hands please do what's best for them. Right now I am very sorry to say that unless measures are taken to get these babies to an experienced vet and hand feeder I strongly doubt they will survive.

Okay I'll take him to the avian vet. But he seems alright. He is growing up and active as usual. Its been a week. Since he swallowed

I have been hand feeding baby parrots for more than 7 years. They all are fine and happy and some are flown. I love ringnecks and alex parrots. I buy 1 baby almost every year and when it is hand tamed and grown. I sell them or I gift them to my loved ones.

Curretly I have another 1 year old Alex parrot. Last year, when he was about 4 months old, he was also vomiting, so I took him to the shop where I bought him. Shopkeeper told me that this parrot has fever. He gave me syrup. And I gave that syrup 3 times a day only for 1 day. And then, he was okay. And now, he is sooo cute and talkative. I love him more than any parrot that I hand tamed.

But don't know what happened this year.

I will surely take them to the vet.

Everything that Labell has posted about this is as serious has it gets. I find it hard to believe that you have been hand feeding parrots for more than 7 years and yet, still have difficulty in doing it.

If a Vet told me this situation was OK. I would be getting a second opinion ASAP.
I don't know what a pet doctor is but this bird has a 2cm long tube inside it's digestive tract. IT'S NOT OKAY. It's been a week and this tube is still inside this baby bird. If you just wait then the bird will most likely die.

I found out what happened to the other baby. He was vomiting because my mom washed his face, neck and almost all the body, she thought that he is a bit dirty so she did that. And she told me when I was about to go to the doctor.

I took him to the doctor, and he said that this baby has fever so he gave me medicine and now baby is recovering.

As per the baby who swallowed the tube, is concerned. I discovered that we don't have any avian vet in our whole country. I am so disappointed. But I will take him to the other vet available in my city.

Ok, in that case I suggest you find out where the nearest avian vet is that you can email or call. Sadly in your case this may cause the bird to die since you do not have access to the kind of vet care you need. Are there any small animal vets who see pets smaller than dogs or cats? Can you afford X-rays? I will pray that somehow the tube got lost and was not actually swallowed.
