Sonu - Alexandrine Parakeet (1 and a half years old)
Hi guys I have an alexandrine parakeet about a year and a half old.
He started losing his feathers in march 2015 and they stopped losing in august but they were growing back very slowly and not long before they were fully grown he again started losing them at a very fast pace he has lost his tail (yeah I know it's pretty sad and he looks like an alien) and now his Flight feathers.

Just so you know I live in a town in in Bhilai in India so yeah I don't have an access to a vet and the only available one does not treat birds (I asked him).
So my only and only hope are you guys (Because my parents wont allow taking him to another town as I bought him in against most of their wishes :p and I provide him green leafy vegetables only sometimes sprouted beans and I don't know if this is normal but he does not know how to bathe and he hates water so I bathe him once every week and have his cage washed everyday.

He eats three times a day with me only.

So thanks guys and even the smallest bit of help would be very helpful

Thanks from me and my Sonu(That's his name):)

My Alexandrines moulted rather oddly during their first year. So long as your Sonu is healthy and well, I don't think you have too much to worry about. Are his eyes bright and alert? His feathers well-coloured and not ragged or dirty? Is he eating and drinking every day?

My Alexes absolutely REFUSE to bathe in a tub. The only bath they will accept is a mist bath. This is time-consuming, but the birds need their bath in order to keep their skin and feathers in good health. I'm only bathing my birds once a week at the moment because it's winter here in Australia and very cold. In summer, they like to bathe every day.

My birds are both adults now and they get a cup each of mixed fruits and vegetables every day as well as pellets and a small amount of mixed seeds. They don't eat all of this, but they do seem to like a varied choice in their diet. Whatever they don't eat goes to the wild parrots that visit our roof. :)

Sonu is so cute!!! I love the way you have his special perch where he can see what's going on. That's great. :)

Betrisher I looked onto the web for Moulding and I really still have my doubts because he has lost MANY feathers (literally he has very very few flight feathers)

Yet hope it's just moulding *Trying not to cry* but still they are not growing back.
And again thanks For the help guys (Betrisher and Wendy)

Just be patient for a few weeks. The feathers don't grow back over days - sometimes it takes a few weeks, especially when the bird is very young as Sonu is. AND sometimes, the feathers will start growing back and then moult right out again. I don't know why that happens, but it did with my Beaks in their first two years. :)

Hi

This is my 1st post here.

My Alex is about 1.5 year old and I've had him for a year now.

About 8 months ago he lost all his tail feathers, and we don't have any avian vets here too.
I started researching and I found out that it could be either metal poisoning or I give him to much peanuts.

I stopped giving him peanuts as a treat and I bought an expensive cage for him. A few months later , his tail started to grow back again and all his feathers are complete again.

I hope this helps you out.

Hola again los amigos sonu's losing feathers at a lower rate now, which is about 1 feather everyday and fant-magi cally he dosent seem to be losing to many of them. But I was reading a bit more and found out that bald spots could be seen during bathing and I tried and literally he is having a lot of them he has not lost any other hair, only flight and tail feathers, they are quite unusually happening. I was quite freaked out and he also attempted suicide and a damn time it was when I wasn't home my family was freaked out hell but we saved. He is a strong sibling. Also he hasn't developed any gender indicators. On which I read that the males developed a black ring around their neck. He had one for some time but now they have magically disappeared.

My girls feathers have started to curl...move heard it may be too many sunflower seeds. I not sure if you feed him that?

My Alexandrine started losing his tail feathers when he was about 1 year old. I did some research and found something called metal poisoning. So I changed the cage and bought an expensive cage imported from Belgium.

I also found that peanuts aren't healthy in large quantities. So I also stopped giving him peanuts, even as a treat. His tail started growing back again once I changed these 2 factors and now he looks perfect.

Hope this info is helpful.
