Hello, i have an alexandrine now for 3 months. I was told its a male and he was 8 months old. He can be handled easily and he is not biting generally. But our problem is that he is not making a sound. In the cage only thing he chews the bars like crazy but when i let him out he absolutely does nothing but sits idle on the high places.i also bought him some toys but he chewed only their ropes so they are not usable any more. And he only eats sunflower seeds and nothing more. I dont know what to do with him, he is not acting like a normal parrot i think :) any suggestions and help will be REALLY much appreciated. Here is a picture of him..

First off Change his diet as quickly as you can.
He is living on fat... fat... and sugar.

Fruits Veggies and other things are what he needs.
Pellets or a high quality seed mix WITHOUT Sunflower seeds.

What a beauty!

But yes, the diet is very dangerously lacking. Not your fault; you should have been told and shown.
I bet your darling feels sick. It would be the equivalent of me eating nothing but French fries...

Here is a thread that explains.

Or... there is good info on almost any parrot site online.

Good luck.
Good for you for caring and asking.

By the way, there are ways to convert birds to good diets... in the thread.

I got my Alexandrine when he was 5 months old back in 2014. He, only ate sunflower seeds also. I noticed he was interested in eating what I'm eating, so I ate boiled/steamed vegetables and fresh fruits for 2 weeks (I hate eating veggies myself). This made him interested in veggies and fruits.

Now he loves veggies and fruits.
Best of luck my friend.

Alexandrines are such wonderful birds! You have a real beauty there, thanks for sharing the photo.

Please take all the good advice you have been given concerning diet. No bird can exist on sunflower seeds alone, you can avoid serious health issues by providing your Alex with a healthy diet. Please browse through the diet section and learn, learn, learn. Sunflower seeds should only be given as the occasional treat or not at all. Offer a variety of foods to your little guy, if he turns up his beak at the new foods at first, be patient and keep preparing the vegetables and fruits in different ways, diced, chopped, or shredded, your bird will come around.

What kind of cage does your little friend have? You should take a close look at the bars he's been chewing, it's possible he's chipped off some of the paint and he may have even ingested it. Metal poisoning can cause lethargy and lead to a very ill bird. I'm not trying to alarm you, but it's a possibility you should look into.

Toys should be replaced when they become frayed or chewed to the point of being dangerous. Chewing is great for relieving boredom and providing exercise for your bird. I would choose some new toys with wood pieces, cotton rope or shreddable paper for your bird to try.

Lazy is an accurate description for lots of humans, very seldom for our feathered friends, most of them like to keep busy. Best of luck, please keep us updated with your bird's progress.

Many thanks to all of you for your feedbacks and care. I will immediately start to change his diet. I bought him versele laga seed mixed with dry fruit. I think he will like some boiled vegetables. Unfortunately it is really hard to find pellet in my country but i will try to find. Also his cage made from brass metal and i think it isnt painted.
I really want him to play with me and talk and bond to me so ill try whatever it takes

Beautiful bird, and welcome to the forum.

A "good" diet for anyone/anything is imperative! Seed alone is not good at all :( I am bad,I still give my amazon seed, but her diet mainly consists of "good" food, veggies and fruits and some people food, nutraberries etc.

Amy has gotten to the point now, where even tho she has a bowl of seed, her interest now is her nummy bowl :p That is the first thing she heads for. When I do clean/refill her seed bowl,on her floor papers there is very little debris which tells me she is barely eating out of it.

when you have something to eat <something GOOD lol> sit down by your Alex and share. Say "yummmmm...goooooodddd" and see what he does. You may be pleasantly surprised. :)

My Alex does the exact same thing! She has a large cage and toys an all she wants to do is sleep, clean or eat. That is about it. Same when she is out as well!
