New fella in our lives!

Just picked up our little fella from the breeder yesterday! Hatched August 27, 2016, Carl is weaned onto pellets and just getting used to more fruits and veggies (apples are his current fave). He's just starting to figure out how to play with toys, so hopefully he starts exploring his cage soon. Any tips or suggestions for meal ideas is greatly appreciated!!

Awwwww... Congrats, what a cutie! I don't know anything about IRN's so I can't help you there, but good luck anyway!

Welcome and be welcomed. Carl is a very handsome fellow! So, read up on the nutrition sub board, there are many recipes for whats known as chop, as in you chop the stuff up. Some folks like to always offer fresh, but chop has the virtue of being able to freeze smaller portions if you make a big batch. I alternate. Salty gets free access to his pellets, usualy 2 or 3 types of fruit at noon, and chop mixed with Avicakes ( a seed and pellet cake) or water soaked pellets for dinner. Once in awhile he gets a cooked dinner, sweet potatoe or pumpkin or other warm comfort food.

Does Carl step up yet? That should be his first training. Congrats on getting sunh a beautiful IRN, good luck!

Thanks guys! He's an alexandrine, not an IRN, but beautiful just the same!
@wrench13 the breeder taught him step up and step down, and last night he started to step up for me. Not too bad since we've only had him for a day!!

I shall definitely take a look at the nutrition boards!

Really, thats amazing haha. Hes settled in really well and is pretty laid back. Im a shiftworker so am home alot throughout the day so he has heaps of out of cage time but he hates going back in..he will try for ages running along the bottom of his cage looking for a way out to come back out to us lol. Jett arrived to us on Thursday so weve had a little more time with him though I think. Ive just started clicker training and hes responding really well so Ill keep you updated. Nice to meet you btw, Carl is a stunner:)

I've got a clicker on order haha. Carl is eating and drinking (had some salad last night) but is still a bit shy. I'm taking it slow with him, letting him come to us type deal. So hopefully within a few days he starts to get more confident.

All the boys from his clutch are stunners! I swear Carl has darker feathers on his neck already.

Slowly but surely. He's exploring his cage more (going from one side where his pellets are over to the other side where his fruits and veggies are) but is still a bit shy when we try and get him to step up. He will, but you can tell hes not stoked about it haha. But he loves his fruit and veg!!

Thats a pretty impressive looking salad lol. Good luck with him, Id love to keep in touch but I am forbidden from sending private messages as I dont have 20 posts up apparently. I thought the whole point of a forum was to bring people together..obviously not lol. All the best with him:)

Progress!!!! Carl has started to take fresh fruits through the bar from me. Favourites being blueberries and strawberries. Planning on using the blueberries as a training treat as they are nice and easy to use. Hes still quite shy, backing away if I try and get him to step up, but hes not going as far and hes exploring his cage more. Today is toy clean/cage clean day so hopefully its not too stressful on him.

Using this thread as a sort of journal.

Moved one of Carls toys and now hes actually trying them out/playing. Still quite shy but getting better each day (traveling further across his cage to get a berry from my hand).

He loves his pellets almost as much as his fruit and veggies. The current salad "base" consists of: spinach, broccoli (flourettes and leaves), butternut squash/pumpkin, jalapeños, chickpeas and brown rice. Topped with fresh fruit daily.

Hopefully the clicker training helps him come to trust our family, he was out of his cage the other day and bit my husband when he tried to put him back in. Ed realises its probably because hes still adjusting so calmly put him back in and let him be for a bit.

Glad to hear Carl is making progress:). Just something to look out for is this 'bluffing stage' alot of Asiatic parrots go through. Jett seems to have started his in the last few days and his sweet personality has changed. Hes become nippy and very stubborn constantly testing boundaries and even attacking his toys on occasion. From what I can gather it can last from a few days to a few months and it can be over and go back to their normal sweet personality seemingly over night if this stage is handeled correctly and the bites are ignored and the behaviour is not reinforced. The breeder said that their pet male alex went through this stage and was extremely nippy but is now the most affectionate parrot they own. Hopefully this stage doesnt last to long & fingers crossed Carl doesnt go through it. I also had a hard time getting Jett in his cage a few nights ago (hes fully flighted) and because of this all food is now left in the cage so he has to go back in to eat and we close the doors at around 5pm as the more tired he gets the crankier he seems to be and the more stubborn he becomes. It has worked well for us so far but will probably go back to haveing seperate food bowls outside the cage and a later bedtime again when his hormones go back to normal and this naughty toddler stage is over. I still handel him alot on his own terms and the bites are few and far between if hes kept destracted with toys etc. Just my experience so far and something to keep in mind if hes suddenly started being naughty but from everything Ive read & the breeder has told me the bites must be ignored with no reaction or you could be unknowingly be reinforcing this behaviour. Hope this helps, goodluck:)

First DIY lol. Masters closing means cheap plastic chains! Cut into random lengths and strung onto a clip = new toy! Going to make him a ladder or two this weekend as well.
