My Alexandrine can't close his beak

Hello, could you let me know if you think this is normal? When his beak is closed there is always a slight gap (you can just see it in the photo below) between his upper and lower beak. I've had him 4 months and I don't think it's changed.

He has a good diet, lots of chew toys that he devours regularly, plenty of sleep and a full spectrum bulb.

Any help and advice welcome.

How old in you Alex?

As a general statement, Parrots do not fully close they Beaks. The gap between the upper and lower is something to keep in mind and cover as part of your yearly CAV (Certified Avian Vet) check-up. Depending on your Parrot, minor adjustments to the Beak structure maybe required to assure proper positioning.

Full spectrum bulb(s) have no real affect on the Health of your Parrot. They may provide better lighting, especially in the Winter. NOTE: The bulb should not be located next to or very near your Parrot. The proper way of checking how close, is to close: Place the bulb in front of your face the same distance as it is placed with your Parrot. Turn the bulb on and then turn it off. If you have 'blind spot(s)' it is too close to your Parrot!

Ok, thank you. I'll check the bulb. It isn't close, but it is in his eyeline and in the direction he usually faces.

Not sure of his exact age, but hatched last year.

Your Alex is very young and likely does not have any problems with bill formation. Commonly, older Parrots will develop problems with the bite match of the Beak. It is something that should be covered as part of each CAV visit.
