Hi All,
I have an alex (we call him duggu). He was gifted to me around an year back and is approx 2 years old. He doesnt come out of his cage at all, even if all the windows of the cage are left open. Yesterday after much of struggle by showing him treats , he came out and sat on top of the cage. Now I have a few concerns.

1. He wanted to go back inside the cage but didnt know how to do so and was really very scared. Anyone coming near to him or his cage was upsetting him to a great extend. We could figure this out from his eyes. He was trying to bite anyone trying to come close. Was flying randomly and hitting the walls and falling (happened 6 to 7 times), if i went near him to hold him , he was still trying to bite.

After struggling for 1 hour ,I was able to bring the cage opening near his head and he went in and looked happy and scared at the same time.

My Questions are:

How do i make him comfortable of the surrounding or teach him how to go back inside?

He never sits on my hand/fingers inside the cage . How do i make him do that.

I want him to be more outside the cage but how do i make him more comfortable with me . Its been an year now that he is with me and my wife.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
slowly and patiently is the simple answer

let him come out inch by inch. Remember that cage has been his entire world for a year, he's bound to be scared by the sudden space.

Move slowly round him without any sudden moves so as to avoid startling him.

Avoid staring at him when he is out. Us humans have predator face which until they understand we're friendly is frightening for them. Just let him take his time adjusting to it all.

Personally I think getting him on top of the cage is the biggest step. What I would do is keep it up with lots of his favourite treat being on the cage. Maybe even put a shallow bowl of food and water up there (be prepared for splashed water from taking a bath) and then just go about your day letting him venture out as far as he wants. Then for when he needs to go back in the cage use one of the perches from in the cage and offer it as a platform for him to stand on. Hold a treat out so he has to step on the perch to reach it then slowly place him back in the cage
