An Alexandrine parrot.
Hi guys
I'm new to this forum

Well today my mom without giving me any prior notice! brought an alexandrine parrot home and dumped the resposibility of it upon me....:mad::mad:
She bought it from an owner who had the bird for 6 months after getting it from the only big bazaar for pet (hati bagan in kolkata), thats the only info i have on bird.

The previous owner used to neglect the poor bird alot. They did't even given her a proper name..from what i herd they use to fill her bowl of food and water for 2day and hanger her cage outside filling it back after 2 days and cleaning her cage once a month. Shelly does not make any sound nor chirp.....

Current she is getting used to her new environment, at the first few hours she was very much afraid and was siting inside her cage like a statue. She kept on biting me when ever i placed my hand upon her cage (18 times 1st day :) :) :p ), but she did'nt hesitate to take the almond and chilly from my hand. After that I sat beside her cage for about 5 hours observing her and then she started making click noise. Well thats the only noise she can do as per my observation, Then she kept on doing flipping inside her cage like some circus show.

well that for today as 2/3/2018 :green2::green2:

good job on taking her in

your biggest priority right now is to get an proper appropriate cage with natural wood perches and toys for her as the one she is in right now is clearly not appropriate for her. I wouldn't know where to get one in India but if you can get Amazon to ship to you this kind of cage would be good for her (just aim to get as big a cage you can with appropriate bar spacing (I'm not too sure for alexandrines what bar spacing is needed) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Costway-Black-Parrot-Cockatoo-Supplies/dp/B075N9MWHG/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1520018643&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=parrot+cage+large&psc=1

Welcome to Parrot Forums!

Instead of inserting you hands into your Parrot's cage. Consider sitting along side and close to the cage and reading out loud, but softly to your. This will allow your Parrot to become comfortable with you and your voice.

Your goal is to create a comfort of you being around. Parrots have no reason to trust Humans. So, we need to assure them that we are trustworthy. Tomorrow try to offer a favored treat.

This will start you on a path of developing a relationship with your Parrot.

Yaa I too have a thought of getting a big for her and searching for it. As for putting my hand inside the cage well I have to change her food and water bowl and to clean the base of the cage. Today I had distract her by using my metallic ruller to keep her still and maker her bite the ruller instead of my hand and it works. Her bite is like sharp strong hole puncher, but why does she keep on doing the flips?? Is she trying to escape or just her way of keeping her out of boredom. Currently her diet consists of beans, ripen papaya, pear, carrots, red chilly and 2-3almonds.

Alexandrines are beautiful birds... You'll love the company...
See if the below info helps.
Cage - there's an importer in Chennai who brings in a lot of really good cages. Check out their website piscesimpex
Food - you may wanna add in more veggies in the diet. There are a few pages here that'll give you the info. Almost all the veggies are good. You can add in grains, sprouts, millets & pulses too.
Behavior - that sharp hole piercing bite is because she's not happy with what you're doing. Give her time... Earn her trust. Watch TV with her... Eat with her. If you're ok take a nap in the same room. Read softly to her... Just spend a lot of time.

Have fun... :)

well today marks 7day since i got my parrot, she was not hand tamed nor used to people interaction. She now has a beautiful loving home where she gets all the attention and love. Now she is getting used to my hand and launges less but still bites my hand hard. Every day i provide her freahh leaves, branches and twigs to chew. She doesn't make any of her natural sound, she only makes tick tick noise which she learned from me. I trying to get more close to her every day. I hand feed her all the time and she takes the food from hand and right after she finishes her from my hand she then bites my finger sometime very hard or like a pinch. Her favourite food is biscuits and she jumps towards her cage gate to take it from my hand. Hope to get her to like me and trust so that i can take her out of her cage someday. Now when she feel tierd she hapily and snugly dose off with out being on alert. She is more relaxed compared to before. Today she had her first scrambled egg and boiled fish and she was happy. Also i quiet impressed of er biting strenght, she borke my hard plastic comb into 2...

heres the link to her goofing some of her photo after getting a nice bath and of sleeping.

Good she's settling down

From her feather colors she seems healthy...

I would stay away from biscuits & fish. Egg whites are good.

The cage is still a problem... The flips you see her do is not her playing but her unhappiness/ boredom. See how fast you can get her a bigger cage..

Are you letting her out of that cage? Give her some time to explore her surrounding... She'll get more comfortable with you too.

TC...

I'M trying to get her to come out of her cage with treats, so far I have managed to make her come towards the gate of the Cage using her favourite food grapes and then she takes it from my hand sticking her head out of the Cage and then she goes back up to her perch to eat it. She takes the food from my hand and when she finishes her food she bites my hand. It's like she wants me to be there and at the same time she doesn't want me to be there. It's only been 7day and I hope that once she bond with me completely she will trust me take her out of the cage. I still afraid of her biting me though.

good she's taking food from you as for the bites afterwards remember she's new and she was at a market stand. Market stands mean general public, general public with a bird in cage means fingers and poking so she's probably a little traumatized by fingers at least for the moment. For now when you give her the grape move your hand away slowly so she doesn't feel the need to bite in protest. Essentially right now you want her to think your hand only means good things right now (food) instead of thinking the hand is going to do something to her
