Hi all,

I'm considering adopting an older Alexandrine and am wondering what size cage would be suitable. I currently have an eclectus who lives in a 36"x26"x64", and while I'd like to get the exact same cage for the Alexandrine, I'm kind of afraid that it would not accommodate the ARN's huge tail.

Here is the link to my 36"x26"x64":

Here's another cage from the same seller I was considering, a corner cage, I think the sides are 40", not sure if it would be any better:

Also feel free to attach links to cages you have for your ARN if you feel they've worked out well.

Thanks for your input,
Bailey

Really, the best you can do is to buy the biggest cage you can afford. Alexandrines have a unique personality and use their cages differently from other birds. Mine don't play and use their cage in the same way my corella does. While she bounces around inside her cage like a supercharged electron, the Beakies just sit and preen and chew and wait to be allowed out.

Their favourite thing to do is *fly* and they spend plenty of time 'flying on the spot' on the walls of their cage (that needs Space). Out-of-cage time is for flying first and socialising second and it never ceases to amaze me how acrobatic and clever they are! Madge can fly through a door left ajar only about six inches!

You're right to consider the tail as well. There are few things sadder than a noble Alexandrine without his tail and they *do* break if the cage footprint is not accommodating enough.

My own cage is 2m x 2m x1m and that gives my Beaks the opportunity to fly a short hop from perch-to-perch or floor-to-perch as well as plenty of space in which *not* to damage their tails. You may not have floor space for such a large cage, but do get the biggest one you can: you won't be sorry! :)

I think the first it better. Awesome cage BTW
Many parrots prefer to be higher off the ground though and usually won't use the lower portion of the cage at all. That can free you up to spend less on the thiner bar box style cages that are still big but higher off the ground. If you think will stand up to their beaks, I think would. Longer is better than taller cage not the heith off floor, I like the stands that get them higher off floor.
