15 yr old male Congo Grey needs home. (San Antonio)

Long story short: I purchased him in 2001 as a chick, and in 2003 when we had our 1st daughter he got jealous and started biting and screaming for attention. Before the birth of our 2nd kid in 2004, he was taken in by my grandparents (which was supposed to be till after we had the baby but then got stationed overseas so they kept him longer) and ended up staying with them for 12 years. My grandfather passed away in 2006 so he kept my grandmother loads of company till she died since he did not have to compete with anyone for attention. We have recently 4 months ago re-inherited him back (grandmother passed away) and find that we are unable to give him the care that he needs and are not a good fit together afterall. He has recently been to the vet and has a clean bill of health. He is very talkative and picks up sounds fast. He is not mean or fearful, but he is known to bite when he isn't getting his way. He does step up and has had some potty and clicker-training. He is not cuddly but will take some pets on his back, (not the head). He comes with a new cage and all accessories.

I wish there was some way I could do it. I just recently (November 2016) rescued a female CAG Named Bella. They are amazing birds and there intelligence is stunning.

So very sorry to read this tale. With respect four months is a very short time to have him back with you. Greys are very intelligent and he probably is grieving in his way for your grandparents also. Different homes have different routines, noises, people and all these need to be adjusted to. It is tough at times owning a parrot, they certainly are a challenge as I have personally found. We have a parront on here who took in a male CAG and he has only just started to come out of his cage one year later. It seems the more intelligent the animal the longer it takes to adjust.

I'm sorry you are faced with this decision. I agree with Plumsmum, greys are extremely intelligent, the loss of his humans of twelve years can't be easy for him. I hope you are able to find him an excellent new home. Please select a new home with caution in the best interest of your feathered friend.

Allee, thank you for the link. Just like the link says this is an emotional decision that I keep going back and fort debating. I have been trying to do everything here that you all have recommended and he has had some changes to the positive. The main thing however is that the noise is still an issue although the worst "I will have your attention now" sound he was making has stopped and has been replaced with a slightly better sound. We had been trying clicker training with him which only worked when he realized he was getting treats at first and then after about 2 weeks he decided he didn't care and stopped looking for a treat when he heard the clicker. The kids are irritated because it is hard to hear their school lessons over his very loud attention demanding noises. I have been trying to keep it together and doing OK, but my husband is always 2 steps from strangling him when we are trying to talk about something and he constantly is making some obnoxious noise to get the attention on him instead, which he will do several times a day no matter where he is in the house. We are frustrating each other so he is nippy with me, and I am out of patience with being bitten because he is mad that he has to go in his cage for any reason. No one else will touch him because of it. And yes, I know some would say it's cute, but I really don't care for the fact that he now calls me by my grandmothers' dogs name when he knows I am cooking and going to come feed him. He spends a lot of time out of his cage but if he is closed inside he will cling to the side of the cage looking directly at me and bark and call me the dogs name to come let him out. I am annoyed enough where I am just not finding it funny.

I keep going back on this because he sounds like my grandmother and her passing in November is so fresh on my heart. I know it is wrong to keep him out of guilt if he could be better cared for elsewhere. Hearing her voice everyday makes me both hate and love him at the same time for it.

We also have to remember that my husband has 10 more years left in the military and we are trying to get stationed overseas, and my mother has already said she will not take him in for the time we are out of country. I will not even try to take a bird to another country and put him through that mess. Eventually, if that happens, we will have to find him another home anyway.

So sorry to hear this, praying that Sterling's forever home is soon found. Realise the emotional turmoil this is having on you.

The name calling sorry, was a little funny. They certainly know which buttons to push!

Does he get along well with other birds?? If he does I might be able to help out because I want a possible friend for my too' I live in San Diego, what are your thoughts? I don't mind that he likes his space because my too' is a cuddle bug, requiring all my attention when I am home

He has actually never been around other birds so I cannot say. He loves to be included in things and to cut up and goof off but he is just as they say "stubborn as a Grey." He wants things his way so can be moody. He was very cuddly as a chick and I took him everywhere with me in the house and would cuddle in your lap and lay on his back. He is just not that kind of adult now. But my grandmother didn't handle him because when he bit her she bled a long time so his only out of the cage time was to climb around outside and sit on the top, so he is defensive of his cage even though he is in a new cage now that he is with us. He takes showers with me; he stands on the shower door and gets spritzed and makes silly sounds and he has a tabletop perch he is on a lot, and he likes to play on the kitchen counter.

He is used to being round dogs and cats. With my grandmother's Pomeranian Zoey he would call her to the cage and when she would show up he would then call her stupid dog and laugh at her for falling for it. (Zoey now lives with my mother) With our 2 cats he makes cat noises and calls them each a "good girl" when he sees them (although one is a boy).

Awe he sounds sweet if you would like me to take him, maybe we can arrange something, I would probably want to see how he does around my cockatoo first

I wanted you all to know that we have found a new home for Sterling. He will be moving to a 40 acre horse farm with a 14 x14 outside aviary. They have peacocks and guineas running around so I am sure he will be mimicking them in no time. He moves tomorrow. We will be sad to see him go but think he will be very well cared for and have lots of distractions to keep him occupied.

Thanks, the owner sent a photo of the aviary and it has recently had work done on it, but he is going to wait a few months till Sterling is adapted before taking him to try it out. He said they nearly have a zoo and have taken in rescue dogs too.
