New Biting Behavior

Alright, so about two weeks ago...my mom mentioned that Sisqo bit her and broke the skin. Her excuse was that she went to take his breakfast bowl out of his cage WHILE HE WAS EATING. Soo...simple solution...don't do that again.

Now though...everytime she picks him up, he gets on her hand, and then bites her (on her hand). No matter where he's at, whether he has a food bowl by him or not.

I told her to do the 'earthquake' thing, with flipping your hand around, but that doesn't really fix the "problem" whatever it may be. Just a temporary solution to the behavior.

My mom looks after Sisqo when I'm not there (removing breakfast bowls, taking him out at night, feeding dinner, & giving meds)...so it's not like she's some strange person that all of a sudden started handling him.

Do you think this biting is because she took his breakfast bowl out that one day?

I wouldnt think the grudge would last that long.... when he first bit her did she pull away fast. Maybe Sisqo saw that he had "power" over her and is now abusing it. I am not quite sure though. Maybe your mom could try a 'time out cage'

Well, knowing my mom...she probably yelled "Ow", and pulled her hand away. She asked me if she could thump him on his beak, and I said absolutely not. Told her she could only do the earthquake thing and say that he was a bad bird.

...that's what I do...Iggy sometimes yells "Ow" too, which just adds insult to injury.

Maybe you should try not even doing the earth quake thing... she might be getting mad at her for doing that and give Sisqo another reason to bite her again... maybe try some gloves and not reacting at all :33:
They are like kids, trying to get one up on the other... Sisqo bites, mom "quakes", Sisqo bites again, mom "quakes" again..... I can hear it now
"Moooooom, she wont stop tooooouching meeeeee!"

Well, I just told her about the earthquake thing last night...so we'll see how it works. Apparently it's been recommended to people with biting cockatoos, etc.

It just seems weird because the only other time he's bitten before is whenever he doesn't want to step up on your hand. Not when he's actually ON your hand.

I think I couldn't help but laugh if that were to happen. Even though I would be in extreme pain, if my bird said 'Ow', I think I'd still be able to crack a smile...which would then lead to it happening more because I laugh at the bird when he says it...and hence, vicious cycle.

It's funnier when he misses (because of my cat like reflexes of course)...and it's also funny when I'm in the other room and Chase is with Iggy and all of a sudden I hear "OW!" from Iggy and not Chase...yet Chase ends up being the one bleeding.

But the earthquake thing might help, before Iggy turned into what he is now it used to discourage him...

When your Mum does this, don't say a word to him, If that doesn't work try just putting him back and totally ignoring him. None of mine like being ignored so whatever they have done they make sure they don't do it again.

Showing any sign will reinforce the undesirable behaviour.
