My mom's Amazon lives in a cage 18x18x26.
It seems too small to me.
He cannot really spread his wings fully.
He does get out ,but not much.

I wanted to get him a bigger cage. Maybe more like 24x24x40?
A few replies here might help convince her.

Thanks

It is way too small, Merlins is 2.5 times that size & he's a smaller amazon. This guy has been a loyal pet for 50 years, he deserves a new cage for his retirement. Something w/a perch on top (playtop) would be ideal, he would enjoy being out on top. Maybe not 2.5 times, but alot larger, here's a link to a similar cage http://www.bird-supplies.net/chiquita-playtop.htm. If money is a problem, they have playstands, am I right in saying that he isn't too active. He might enjoy a playstand to be out during the day.

No offense but I feel really sorry for that guy. There is, from what I can see, one toy in that tiny cage. My amazons cage is 32x22. Amazons love to play, and are really active. I could never go smaller than that.

Yep, he needs a bigger cage and more toys.......I wouldn't overwhelm him at first with toys but he needs some more toys....some wood to chew on, some foraging....he would love it....the rust is of concern to me on that cage also....
I am proud of you for upgrading things for this wonderful bird...would love to see more pictures of him also...keep up the good work.
The cage I have for my caique is a flight cage but he loves all the space and uses every inch of it.....flight cages are also cheaper then regular cages...just something to think about.

Thats a horrible cage! My GCC/tiels cage will be the Santa Cruz California cage which is made for small amazons. The size you want sounds good.

Thats a horrible cage!

Can you explain why you think that? It may be helpful to others looking to buy it.

I think they are talking about the small cage it's currently in, not the one in the post before it.

Oh jeez! A duh! lol

your right, your mums cage is WAY to small.....good luck getting another one. general rule of thumb is bigger = better, get the biggest one you can afford for the space. decide where its going to go first and take measurements of what can fit..... remember horizontal space is just as important as vertical space, and parrot love to climb so horizontal bars are good on at least 2 sides. Try and avoid round cages as most birds like to retreat to a corner for space. good luck! It will be the best thing you can do for that beautiful bird!

Go on criegslist or ebayclassifieds. Some are near new for 100 buck!! Hq cages at that.
I will be getting Sam a new cage this fall from it.
Also amazons require alotta space :(. essp yellow heads.
Toys can freak a 50 yo amazon out. But honestly I'm gonna be straight fwd with you.
Your zon will not make it bt a few more years unless you give him a better play time and larger cage. Also since he's in such a small cage for such along time. Your gonna want lots of perchs and ladders. he won't be able to maneuver well considering he perches on one perch all day. Are you able to let him out for some play time at all. He really needs it :)

Yes I would say a bigger cage and more toys. It's looks to be a stainless cage, so it shouldn't have any rust. And as been said Bigger the better just make sure the bar spacing is appropriate.

I dont mean its a horrible cage in quality, features, etc., I mean its a horrible cage for the amazon because its small.

Yes.
If it were my house I would just let him fly free .
Actually, after seeing a fleet of wild scarlet macaws in costa rica, even a 2000sq ft "cage" is not enough

What is a "flight cage"?
Would this be a good cage for Sam?
A&E Cages Wrought Iron Flight Bird Cage - Cages & Stands - Bird - PetSmart

It is 21x31x35 (22700 sq in)and "only"$200

or this one ?
Prevue Pet Products Parrot Cage - Cages & Stands - Bird - PetSmart
It is 21x25x29 (15225sq in)for $119

The first cage listed is almost exactly like the one my caique has....and I love it. I am not big on seed guards so it works for us...it has plenty of room for him to play and spread his wings.....and it cleans up so nice. I paid $200 dollars for ours and I couldn't be happier with it.

The second one you listed is to small and I don't think you would be happy with it.
I know in this day and age 200 bucks can sound like a lot of money but it really isn't when compared to the cost of some cages. Let us know what you decide...

I would start with the cage and then slowly add more toys here and there , you don't want to totally stress this baby out. ....good luck..I can't wait to see everything when you have it set up....I am so happy for you and your bird....
