Someone told me that Sisqo was a Magna Double Yellow Head. Any opinions on this? Apparently they are supposed to be larger than normal Amazons and have more yellow and red.

Personally, I think Sisqo is rather small for being a Double Yellow Head (414g at the end of February) but perhaps that could be from his illness...he was still gaining some weight. But he does have kind of extensive coloring.

Just wondering. It had crossed my mind before, but I never looked into it.

I would agree that he is a magna based on the coloring, he does have a lot of yellow and red. I have no idea about size though. But he is gogeous, especially the pics of him in the sun.

1 Quaker and a DYH Amazon on the way
Hello,

I was actually quite interested in the "Magna" or the "Tres Marias" Double Yellow headed amazon and did a lot of research to try and figure out what it is exactly that distinguishes a normal dyh with one of these specialized varieties. (if that's what you want to call them) What I've found is... there is a lot of breeders that will tell you they have a magna or tres marias DYH amazon and the prices of the babies will be much higher then say for a normal DYH. The problem with this is... you can't do a DNA test to prove that in fact you have purchased a Magna baby. Sisqo is a Very beautiful bird and he may be a Magna Double Yellow headed amazon. But where would you draw the line and say... "yes this is a normal DYH amazon, and this one here is a Magna". I've always thought this was an interesting topic as I've seen babies who have apparently came from "Magna or Tres Marias" parents and have grown up to look like any other normal Double yellow headed amazon.
I've found a little blurp from a website stating the coloring/size is determined from which region the birds are from. I'll try to find some of the more interesting articles I've came across about these beautiful birds.

"The most conspicuous geographical difference is the amount of yellow. In adults, the head and upper chest are yellow in the subspecies of the Tres Marías Islands in the Mexican state of Nayarit (tresmariae); just the head in the widespread subspecies of Mexico (oratrix); just the crown in Belize, Guatemala, and far northwestern Honduras (belizensis); and the crown and nape in the Sula Valley of Honduras (hondurensis, which thus resembles the Yellow-naped Parrot). Immatures have less yellow than adults; they attain adult plumage in 2 to 4 years.http://www.answers.com/topic/yellow-headed-parrot-

The variety "Magna" (or "Magnum") is bred for more yellow and commands a premium price as a pet.[5] Some "extreme" Magnas have as much yellow as Tres Marías birds, but are distinguished from them by heavier barring on the chest and a less bluish tint to the green plumage.[6]" http://www.answers.com/topic/yellow-headed-parrot-1

I've also spoken to this breeder in Arizona about his Tres Marias and Magna breeding pairs and he seems super informative and maybe you could ask him what he thinks about Sisqo if your determined to find out if he is or not.

Sorry for rambling! hopefully that was of some help, maybe... a little bit? haha anyways, go take a look at that breeders DYH pairs! They are Gorgeous!!!!

BTW Sisqo is a VERY handsome amazon and for all we know he could be the first ever Lemon Stardust variety...

Bye bye for now!

Thanks for your opinions, and the information. It doesn't really matter to me whether or not he is a Magna or not. I know for a fact that he is a sweet, healthy double yellow head and that's all that's really important.

I was just confused, because whenever I boarded him and Gigi on friday, the woman said 'Oh look...a Magna'. However, when this very same place sold him to us 10 years ago, he was just your average DYH. Albeit, he was a baby, but still I found it a bit odd.

Oh well, thanks anyway :)
