Meet Kit

I am fairly new to this forum and have recently brought home Kit from a home she has resided in for 18 years. she also had a owner before these people. That said I am guessing she is in her 20's. The cage she came in doesn't have many toys or perches in it. she has two wooden perches and a bell and one other thing hanging in her cage( not sure what the other thing is lol) she has no cuttle bone and her nails are extremely long.Today we are making a trip to the vet to get her nails trimmed and a check up. want to be sure she is healthy and then we wills start transitioning her diet. Right now she is eating mostly seeds however I have been giving her some assorted good table foods to get her used to some different things. Pellets are not one of her favorites. I have a feeling I will be hiding them in foods as we go.
She will take food from my hand but at this point is not willing to step up or have me get too close without food. So I am looking for pointers from some experienced people on the forum. Maybe some good ideas to transition her. I have a much larger cage for her but have not made that transition yet since I don't want to upset her so I am giving her some time to adjust.I also have a great play gym but can't put her on it if I can't get her back in her cage . I am not sure what type she is either. From my research I am guessing she is a red crown but would love input on that also. I don't know how to turn my photo so unfortunately it is sideways.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. :)

Strikingly beautiful bird. Hope the transition goes well. You may have good luck with a food mix called bountiful harvest which is sold by mysafebirdstore on line.

Just keep on going near with treats and food as you do. In a month you will see great improvement.

The best way regarding the new cage is to have it beside him in the old cage so he can see it and just wait untill you have a stable situation regarding trust and eating and he comes on your hand. When on you hand you can bring him to the new kage and let him clime on it. Then I think it is time for him to live in the new cage. Good luck

Back from our vet visit. It was interesting. He has some concerns. When she should have been all frantic and nervous she was sitting kind of hunched and closing her eyes like she was going to sleep. He feels that she is week and could either be age diet or something internal. Hard to say at this point. She has obviously not had a lot of interaction but that isn't a concern. I am hoping there will be time for that. One of the things he stated to me was that the way she looked and by him toweling and bringing her out of the cage there was the possibility that it could be too much for her.
So we did it since I felt we needed to check her out and see what was going on (if We could) he found nothing that was visual however she is very thin. She has been on a diet of seed and I am not sure how much good stuff she had access to. I have been giving her a little egg with the shells and she eats that. I put some kale hanging in her cage and some parsley but so far nothing.
I will make her some cooked foods tonight and maybe put some pellets and vegies into them to try and get some vitamins into her. I also set up a heat lamp for her and will continue her seed diet along with pellets and other stuff just so I know she is eating. Will take things one day at a time and be thankful for every day and pray we have many more Positive thoughts and lots of love. It always seems to work the best.
Will keep you posted.

Just remember to proceed at her pace. Let her get used to you, her new surroundings, etc. Sit by her, and talk to her. Read aloud. The words don't matter. She will focus on your emotions, facial expressions, and general demeanor. It takes time to gain their trust. You sound like you're doing very well with her. A way to get pellets into her is to grind them into powder, and mix with food that she likes. Since she's thin and weak, don't worry about pushing her to do much now. Concentrate on getting her healthier. Good luck, and thanks for getting her out of her previous situation.

Green Cheeked Amazon ,Aka, Mexican Red Head. Ask about her Vit A, Maybe heavy metals also judging from that cage. A little sunlight and fresh veggies won't hurt either. She looks to be in poor health , did you take her to an Avian Vet ? Maybe carry the vet a sample of her dropping next visit. I wouldn't change her basic foods at this time but offering new healthier foods won't hurt .You need to get a weight on her to help monitor her progress. Will she talk ,sing, squawk or make any sounds, does she play, climb around?

Yes I did take her to a Avian vet. He said right away that she did not look good and explained his reasoning. He also already took a poop sample and is checking it also. We weighed her and will be reweighing her in two weeks. She does whistle and will growl if i do something that makes her to nervous. she doesn't talk but once in a while I think she is saying something but it is not very clear. The people who had her said she didn't talk much. She does wander around her cage some. My vet also said to keep her food the same and offer her some healthier options. he also said to put a heat lamp about a foot away from the cage so she could have the heat or move out of it . I have parsley and kale hanging in her cage.
Tonight I made her some bread with pellets and vegies in it. She ate a small bit of that. I didn't want to overfeed her. Then she had a small amount of pasta with vegies, pellets, and soy cheese. Will keep you updated as time goes by.

Hey middchix, i might have been a bit hasty in IDing your bird, looks like he might be a LCAXGCA hybrid, Lilac Crown X Green Cheek Amazon, but it doesn't really matter. Good chance for before and after photos, i know he'll start to look better in your care.

I have a few other photos but I am having a tough time getting them downloaded for some reason. I appreciate all the help figuring out what she is although it really doesn't matter Lol. I just want her to be happy and healthy. I will keep asking questions and taking in all the info I can through some of the more experienced people out there. :)
So once again thanks for all your help. she keeps doing this little soft kind of chatter. and when she is hungry she says "want a cookie" or when she wants a treat I should say lol.
