Hi all you Amazon lovers!!!

I would like to hear from owners of male DYH since everything I've read suggests that they are more aggressive than females during the breeding season.

Don't sugar coat it, I can handle it. I'm interested in their behavior during the breeding season. I want to hear the good, the bad and the very ugly.

Is your DYH's hormonal behavior hardly noticeable or does he turn into a weapon of mass destruction during the breeding season? How do you best deal with your DYH hormonal issues? Do they return to their fun loving self after the hormones have settled down? I've heard that after 10 or so years the hormones settle down for good. Is this true?

Here are some issues I am dealing with with regard to Chili.
When I come into the birdroom he immediately flies to me and lands on me? He's not attacking just wants to be on me. He's very persistent little guy. I try not to make myself a landing pad and will waive my arms, duck or whatever so he doesn't land on me. I've been told that I should put my hand up (palm facing him as if to say Stop) but I don't think I am getting thru to him.

Also sometimes he will land next to me like on the arm of the chair which is fine but what he likes to do is lean over and try to nibble. So when he flies over to sit next to me how can I encourage him to sit and not nibble?????

Chili Pepper is coming up on 2 years old. The hormonal issues may be just around the corner and I just don't think I can be too prepared.

I did my homework/research before bringing Chili Pepper home and most of what I read was a little scary. However, I just had to have a DYH in my life.

Look forward to your comments.

I think males are more outgoing, outspoken but can be as cuddly as a hen, just not as early in life. The best talker i.ve been around are hens but males seem to be more prone to be "talker". Harmones seem to hit males earlier in life but don't seem to last as long as most female hormonal behavior. My older hens are still having hormonal issues where the males lose the behavior or have short seasonal bouts. They seem to have a lot in common with humans, females look for a secure longlasting bond and males seem more "cavalier" .Not that both sexes still can make friends other than their mate but males seem to except strangers better, except when harmonal. In the "wild" males have to defend a nest site and the strongest male wins the best tree. Many of my males like other birds but will fight to the death if a nest box is involved.I think that is why so many males give the "hot three" such a bad rap. That and the fact that these species where so heavily imported to virgin parrot owners. These same birds seem to be slightly more sophisticated than other species so are prone to more behavioral issues.( hope that doesn't get me into trouble). So much depends on a birds unique personality that i wouldn't say sex is that important, meet as many birds as you can and find the one you click with. Hope that answered some of your questions.

I have a male DYHA 1,8 yeras old. I am really clear what I like and not like and he is doing progress and we have found a way of socialysing. I thing that the key to minimize hormon issue is to be really clear and what is OK and not. The screaming was a issue but is more or less not anymore. Also biting was a issue, but not anymore. Of cause I dont know what to expect when i hormonal stage, just have to wait and see

Thank you for your replies.

henpecked I PM'd you my phone. Would absolutely like to speak with you further about my DYH.

I really think that my biggest problem is communication and you communicate with your birds thru training. I think this is really where I need to concentrate my efforts and where I need the most help. We can talk more about this when you call.

Thank you.
