Lookinf for an expert on unusual markings and colors of feathers concerning our yellow nape "Cha Cha".

Cha Cha is a little over 4 months old (male) and we noticed that one of what we think is his primary feathers came in with maroon?, green and blue.

I was not sure if maroon was an unusual color pattern for a feather on a yellow nape? There is only one feather each on both wings that have this pattern All other feathers are blue, green and red.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome Parrotkid!!!!!! :D :D :D

I am not an expert in anything, so I will defer to those in the know. But, I want to extend a personal welcome to the Forum, and I just absolutely love the name Cha Cha!! Did you come up with this?

(When my Mojo -- Maximillian Pionus -- was young he had red markings that he grew out of ... I know this is a different species and doesn't help ... but, I'm thinking that there probably isn't anything to worry about?).

Take care kiddo!

First off, Welcome to the forums!!!! I hope you have a great time here-I know I do! :D

Cha Cha is a very sweet name, and sounds cute! We love pics here *hint hint* :D :D

Anyway, I'm definatly not an expert, on, well anything :)p) but I don't think the maroon colouring on your birds wing sounds like anything to worry about. Like I said, don't take my word for it, the 'people in the know' will be along soon and will probably *cough*more-than-likely*cough* give you different advice, but I would say it's not that unusual.

Anyways, hope I helped, even slightly, and welcome again! *hug*

Hey ParrotKid, and welcome! I'm a little confused as to what you are asking...I have a Yellow Crowned Amazon, not exactly the same...but you are saying that the red on his primary feathers looks more like a maroon than the red on the other feathers? Sorry if I'm having a "duh" moment, but I'm confused. If you could describe a little more clearly, I could *try* to help (and the other zon owners too). Again, welcome and GREAT PICTURE. If Iggy didn't want to kill me so badly, I would like to see him flighted :p

I actually had a brief encounter with a 'zon today ... I couldn't figure out what type it was, it wasn't any of the YH zons cause his head was all green ... seemed pretty nice ... I really wonder what happened with Iggy ...

Hey Parrotkid, that is an awesome pic, Cha cha is truly beautiful, I'm so glad that you were able to get the pic up, Have to agree that there's nothing like seeing a fully flighted fid (feathered kid) in flight and having such a good time. You keep them pics coming now. :D

I remember having read this somewhere but I cannot find it right now...
This is normal for an immature amazon, these feathers will hopefully become red after first or second molt..You can help him by rich in vitamin A foods which is very essential for all birds but even more for amazons -they are a little more sensitive to vitamin A deficiency- and also responsible for red colour, such foods have been posted in many threads in the forum, just ask and we will show them to you if you don't manage to find them...Also yellow of the parvipes' subspecies increases with age as withn the rest of the yellow crowned group(which is the main species for YNA and DYH subspecies) and you can have a parrot in some years who will have a small yellow crown together with the yellow nape.Parvipes have red in wing bends, regular YNA don't.

Excellent picture of your fid!He is really handsome!I loved it!Can't wait to see lots more and some stories as well..please!:D

Thanks for the input. I think the Vitamins are sufficient for now. He has vibrant reds in his feathers, just curious about the dark maroon it looks pretty and would be cool if the one set stayed different. It is always good if your little guy has a unique marking that you can talk about.

Cha Cha was born with a couple yellow feathers on the top of his head that has turned in to a yellow spot, and he also has the signature, what I call "cow tounge", black and pink spotted tounge that is found in the parvipes species.

Thanks again.
