Kazi - 13 yr old yellow nape amazon rescue
A week ago Wednesday night/Thursday morning, my oldest, dearest feline friend passed away. I was devastated. He would have been 19 this summer and was, save one time, always in excellent health. His death was unexpected, even at his age, because he was still so active and full of life.

Anyway, needless to say there was much wailing and sobbing and general uselessness for the past week or so.

I had head about parrots' ability to pick up on emotions, but hadn't actually experienced that until Spanky died. Kazi has been amazing. Friday morning I was on the bed sobbing. kazi never comes into the bedroom. There's just no reason for him to be in there usually. The couple of times he's been in there have been on me and for a second while I grab something. But Friday morning I was sobbing on the bed, my husband was back there with me comforting me. Kazi was on his play gym, eating, when I broke down and left. My husband followed shortly afterward. Kazi called for me and I didn't, couldn't, answer. So after about 5 minutes or so of me not answering his increasingly desperate calls he climbed down his gym and toddled on down the hall to the bedroom doorway where he stood until my husband made me aware he was there. Our bedroom is very dark and cool (light blocking curtains and a floor fan going) and I know Kazi couldn't see me, but as soon as he heard my voice he came running over.

The rest of the week he was just...incredible. He stayed stuck to me like glue most of the time, which was exactly what I needed. He wasn't bitey or aggressive at all, even to my husband, who he hates. He was just calm and steady and right there. Around Wed this week he started acting silly and playful which helped pull me out of the pit of despair I was in a little. And if it looks like I'm wallowing, he seems to realize that too and will start to get into something or go wandering around the house chasing the remaining cats so I have to get up and rescue them from him or otherwise occupy his little brain.

I'm really grateful for him.

I'm very sorry for your loss. But I'm glad that you have your husband and your feathered friend there to comfort and support you. Parrots are truly incredible. I've, too, heard about certain animals being able to empathize with human beings, but until I experienced it for myself, it didn't trully sink in. Guava will often rush over immediatly for a long snuggle once she senses that me or my griflriend are upset. She won't bite or make noise or even fidget- but just sits there patiently, and presses herself against my neck or face with a look of concern on her face.
