DYH Not Weaning

I have a 3 month old DYH Amazon that is on 2 hand feedings per day. The bird doesn't show any interest at all in eating on it's own. I offer fruits, veggies, and soften pellets. Whenever I am in view, the bird cries incesently and wants to be fed. Regardless of wether he is full or not, he still cries as long as he can see me. His weight is good. He's big, solid and has vibrant coloration.

Any ideas on how to get him to start weaning and curtail the crying?

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Try him with some mashed potato with mashed veg in it, or try soaking seed and pellets for about 10 mins in boiling water... Keep trying small amounts of fruit as well, chopped up into tiny pieces.

He is crying as he sees you as his Parent, but you will find he will gradually grow out of that!

I had my Yc Zon from 11 Weeks old and was also giving her 2 feeds a day myself, but I also put in her Bowl what I mentioned above and after a few days she was eating it fine.

I hope this helps :) Others will come along and give you advice also... There are alot of Amazon Owners on here.

First off, welcome to the forum.
Just keep offering fruits and veggies, try warm ones too. My baby gcc favorite weaning food was warmed mashed up sweet potatoes. Also if he is crying while full he is just wanting attention, crying is the only way he knows how to get your attention.

Hi and welcome!

Do you weigh your baby every other day? If so, how is his weight?

Have you tried withholding the morning feeding?

At 3 months I feel he could be a bit young to wean just yet. Do it gradually & don't be in to much of a rush. Each parrot weans in their own time.

If he only cries with your in view then it is a learned behaviour. You haven't set any boundaries. If he cries all the time then a vet visit is in order. Could have a mild bac infection.

When my chicks are on 2 feeds a day they go out on my deck in their cage & i go to them when it is feed time or when they are quiet. I bring them inside, give them formula have a play for about 15 minutes & then back in the cage. They have a very small amount of seed & pellets in the cage at all times. At about mid-day they get a bowl of fruit, veg & sprout mix. Late afternoon the 2 feed of formula. Once the sun goes down it's off to bed. You have to give him tough love & teach him good manners.

Hey and welcome to the forum. 12 wks ,many zons haven't weaned but should be starting to show interest in feeding them selves. What method of "handfeeding are you using ? Have you tried switching to a spoon ? Works well for our zons.
