Hi all. I could do with some advice about best way of dealing with a lively young male (less than a year old) bf amazon. He goes through phases of biting and then he will stop for a few weeks before the problem comes back. I try to only pick him up for short amounts of time and only when his body language allows. The main trouble is that he wants to be on my arm as he always fly’s over and lands on my arm but then bites hard. He also likes to swing upside down from my arm and shouts 'whooo' but then gets over excited and bites. I know that it is not Lupines’ fault but is something that I have not trained him properly. Any advice would be great.

You have a immature male zon,HEhehe, sort of like a teenager.Bet his tail feathers are all ragged too. They're kind of rough and tumble at that age, they will test their boundaries (biting),And their checking to see if the flock needs a new leader.Yeah they tend to bite too hard when excited, but that's all part of learning to live with humans. In the wild they'd be hanging out with other immature birds who will bite them back if they get to carried away.I'm not suggesting you punish them but be careful about condoning such behavior by not voicing your "displeasure". Use words like "NO" or "easy" . If he's flighted ,teach recall to the cage or perch and send him there when you see it coming. He'll soon learn that to be with the rest of the flock you have to follow the rules or they don,t want you around. Most zons respond well to outgoing, confident ,take charge type personalities and seem to take advantage of more timid people/situations. At a year old both him and you are still learning the ropes. Reading his moods and "nipping bad behavior in the bud" will help you teach him what is proper behavior in your flock.

Thanks Henpecked. He does try and have a little play fight most evenings but I have to stop them as soon as he tries to climb on to my arm or I will be for it! Lol he is a big character and makes me and my partner laugh endlessly. He seems to use words in the correct circumstance, for example when I was trying to fix our dvd player a few days over he flew over and said 'What are you doing?'. Before getting an amazon I was debating over an African grey, Eclectus or an Amazon. After owning my first amazon, if I wanted another bird it would be an amazon. No question. Yes he is a handful that does push boundaries regularly but he is so confident and so full of comedy antics that I could not be with out him :)

Ahhh. The joys that fill a Zon owner's days. Follow Henpecked's advice. Sounds like you're doing a lot right already. Glad to hear how much your family is enjoying him.
