Hi I am really scared right now. Lupin male bfa (about 1 years old) about two weeks ago started making a slight nasal sound on the intake of breath after screaming. We only just noticed it to be honest. We took him to the vet and they said it said it sounded like a slight infection so gave us antibiotics. It did seem to get a little better but we took him back to the vet and they said it was a bit better but a weeks more antibiotics should clear it. Anyhow, we think its still there slightly and took him back for another check. Then the vet scared the hell out of me and said that it could be fungal as it sounds like its in his sinus area. Thing is he has been acting fine in every other way eg playful, screaming/talking, eating etc and has even put weight on over last few weeks. We now have to treat him for fungal infection which i know can kill my little man :( Thing is we got Lupin after my cockatiel died last year at the age of 7 from an enlarged heart. I seriously can't cope with losing Lupin :(

She said that she would x ray him but she said she suspected she would see nothing as its only a slight noise. I just though if it was fungal then he would be quite ill? We do make sure his veg and pellets are fresh and not mouldy.

If it is fungal it can be treated with anti- fungal and anitbiotics. Do his lungs sound clear? I worry about aspergullis. As long as he is behaving normal and is treated try to think positive. He should be fine. Sometimes fungal infections and sinus infections are a bear to get rid of.

I bet he'll be fine. You're concerned, taking him to the vet, treating him and you said yourself it seems to be helping. I'm sure the vet will pinpoint the issue and be able to treat it. It sounds like you're doing everything right. Sometimes these things are harder to treat than we'd like in our animals, but they can usually be treated!

I am currently treating Cameo with an antibiotic and anti-fungal medications. Lungs are clear but seem to have a slight upper conjestion. I can barely hear the weez. A 10 day treatment of oral injections into mouth twice a day is so much fun to do. Cameo seems healthy other wise. Eats good and very active as usual so I have to think this is not very serious unless not treated as my vet stated. The anti fungal meds are a precaution I think just to cover the bases.

Thanks everyone :) I just so scared of losing my little friend. terry52449 - it sounds exactly like what Lupin has. Did your vet have idea reg what it could be? A person on another forum told me to take Lupin in to a room with a shower running hot, to inhale the steam to see if it helps with his sinus. I am just so scared of asper as I know its a killer.

Aspergullis is not necessarily a death sentence, i have some older rehomes who've had it. If treated early many birds can survive it. Their lungs "wall off" the infection ,much like humans and TB. The issue is with overexposure to the fungus again and medicating the bird with steroids later in life. The way i understand it is, the steroids cause the "Cyst"to rupture , causing a massive attack which can be fatal.

This is an option yes! You can do this with all animals! It can help them to breath better. Don't think of asper right now, think positive! Perhaps try another vet?

Thanks guys. Like I say I can only hear the noise when he screams loudly. He seems happy in ever way. There are no funny noises while he breathes or tail bobbing or being out of breath after flying.

Hi everyone. He went back to the vet on Monday and the vet said that the anti fungals have made some improvement so it sounds like it is a fungal infection. He is still ok other than the trumpet noise when he screams loudly. I am nebulizing him for half an hour everyday with f10. I am just hoping that we can get rid of the fungal infection and make sure he does not get it again.

You don't happen to have allergies, do you? I only ask because I do, year round, and so I'm almost always a little congested. Kazi picked up on one little wheezing sound that I do sometimes with an intake of breath. It's so small a sound I didn't even notice I was doing it, but Kazi imitates it quite well and only before making one or two specific sounds. For about a week I was worried, thinking he was coming down with something. Took me a little while to figure out he wasn't having trouble breathing, just imitating me having trouble breathing!

Glad to hear things are improving.

Are you using the same cage your cockatiel used? I assume you sterilized it afterwards. Don't know how he died but something could be lingering in the cage.

I don't have any allergies that I know of but I have had sinus problems over the last few weeks so i shall get my girl friend to have a listen to see if I make any weird noises. The cockatiel died of having an enlarged heart and had no infections at all so no problem there, but we do not use those old cages. You can only hear his weird trumpet like noise when he screams loudly. His talking is fine and his flying is also fine. I think the vet can hear a slight noise in his sinus/head area.

He is going back to the vet on Monday after two weeks no medication. He has been fine the entire time until tonight. I heard a honk in the middle of a solid half hour screaming. I was really hopeful but am feeling completely demoralised now not sure whether to start treating him immediately or wait until vet on Monday?

How is your bird doing now?
Are you still him nebulizing him?

Pray he gets over it

Hi, all seemed ok we carried on treating him for two weeks, and stopped fir two, he actually seemed better off the treatment but last night (Saturday) we heard the "honk" again and he seemed to be a bit congested all day, we have not heard anything since though seems a little hoarse at times, we have decided not to restart treatment as we are seeing the vet tomorrow and don't want ti start if there's no need. To be honest both myself & my parther have terrible hayfever today& yesterday & were wondering if this could be an allergy thing too? We are so scared of what will happen tomorrow, we are just praying for the best.

I am also hoping for the best for you and your bird. Just like with people (and mentioned earlier), sometimes these infections can just be a real pain to get rid of. Keep a positive outlook, and keep doing what you are doing!
