Hey paul, OWAs aren't known for their talking abilities. he may or not be a good talker. They are very smart and can be taught to do lots of things (tricks),. The first thing to do is make friends and earn his trust, after that the sky is the limit on what you two can do. PS they just get better as they get older, my 40 yr old hen is still teaching me new tricks.

You can take him to a veterinarian to get them cut. I would avoid bird stores because of disease risk. Amazons tend to respond best to people that aren't overly pushy. So keep offering him treats but give him space. A few short interactions spread out during the day. See if you can hold the treat a little bit past your hand so that he has to put a foot on your hand in order to grab the treat. Give him a chance to step off and don't move your hand. You just want him to get used to touching you and know you aren't going to take advantage of him by making him step up and moving him away from his cage. If he's not interested in interacting, talk to him a little bit and walk away. Remember, try to make friends but don't be pushy about it. Sometimes it helps to talk in a very sing song manner with your voice going up and down. A lot of amazons are naturally drawn to that.
