Fell off his perch

Casper has had a fall in his cage. We didn't see it happen but when I heard it I went back into the room just as he was climbing back up the side of his cage from the floor.
As he was on the top of the cage when I left him he must have fallen the full height and probably knocked himself on a couple of perches on the way down.
He was holding one wing out a bit as though it was uncomfortable so Margaret let him step up onto her hand and went to sit down with him in her lap. He lets her stroke the wing so we don't think it is hurt too bad. He has just had a good rummage and pulled out one of his flight feathers. Looks to be comfortable now but is milking the sympathy sitting on Margaret's knee having his neck tickled, a bit quiet and shaken.
I hope he is OK, we only bought his insurance yesterday after having him certified healthy (but slightly chubby) by the vet. It would be a bit embarrassing to have to make a claim so soon.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if he seems ok! Codie falls from the top of her Cage on a regular basis.. she swings from her bell and falls off! They can get very rough when they are playing :)

i wouldnt worry, oscar falls allot too. he just gets that "what just HAPPENED!" look to his face and climbs back up. if your really worried, just call your avian vet and for an opinion, but i think you should just give him some extra cuddles :)

Sugar is so clumsy there isn't a day where she doesn't crash to the bottom of her cage. I wouldn't worry too terribly much about it. He was probably just shocked that it happened and needed some extra reassuring.

News update da dit dit da...
and here is the ten o'clock news (a bit late):
Casper is absolutely fine. We had some friends over for dinner and he shrieked his head off all while we were eating. They probably will never come again.
Oh well.

DYH Amazon, "Lambeau"
CAG, "Greycie".
Adding to my flock once fully weaned; Green Winged Macaw.
Funny, but scary I know. I remember when I first got my Lambeau (DYH Amazon) She would fall all the time. She's much better now being older (1 y/o on 6/22/12) But like most people have stated, she still falls. 99% of the time it's because she's playing so hard and dangling etc. then all of a sudden you hear wings flapping and "bang"! She usually says something too when she hits bottom ...."hi or I love you" something out of the blue.
So get use to it, it happens and will continue to happen. Just check her and give her love like you're obviously doing and you "both" should be fine!

PaulE crashes occasionally, too. He plays so hard, I sometimes find him hanging upside down, each foot clutching a different swinging toy & bashing a 3rd toy with his beak.

And I wonder why he falls?

I've been told after a fall, keep him in a smaller cage (where he can't fall again) with low perches (so if he does fall again, it isn't so far to fall) & keep an eye on him.

Usually it is nothing.

But the plus to keeping him in the small cage for observation . . . he's ready to go to the vet, if he must.

Just passing along advice I was given by an experienced local rescue, in case anyone ever needs it.

Ya, Sassy usually don't fall from her perch but has been playing and slipped. I think she just gets carried away and forgets what she is hanging on to.

I see you just took him to the vet, did they clip his nails? sometimes if they lose that point on their nails they tend to lose their grip more. If he'll let you ,you can file a pointed tip on them and it will help. Of course after a day or two he;ll be used to it and shouldn't slip as much. Does he have different size perches, natural perches, perches that are big enough dia that his toes don't reach all the way around? The wooden dowels that come with most cages are the worst ,too small, slick and the same dia though out the length.

LOL, our Zons do that all the time, they just look around like "what just happened?" & go about their business.

He had his nails and beak done a couple of weeks ago so he should be used to them by now. He has a selection of natural perches (mainly sycamore from the garden).

He chewed through the perch that came with the cage in no time. Fortunately he had one foot on the side of the cage when it gave way. It hasn't gone to waste though, I have used part of it to make a perch that fits on a set of scales.

Since starting his diet he has put on a gram.
