So I was planning on getting a Yellow Nape or Double Yellow Headed Amazon. I have heard they are best talkers in the Amazon family. What about the Lilac (Crown) Amazon? Are they good talkers? I believe they are a little smaller too.The pet shop where I bought my other birds will have one ready tomorrow. Every bird I have gotten from them have been excellent birds, all hand fed. Any input would be appreciated.

Are you getting a parrot just because it can talk? Because that is not a reason to get one.

I don't much about the Lilac crown amazon, but I know yellow napes and double YNAs.

Amazons in general are amazing birds, don't think you'll go wrong in any way :)

My 2 Zons are major talkers. Have recently taught them to whistle, then say "Hello Baby, give me kisses" then the kissing noise. They talk quite a bit, and they are so much fun. Amazing personalities, and so much joy to be around :) I got them when they were just over 2 months old, Hand fed them. One is now a year old, the other turns a year old in about a month :)

i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
I have a lilac crown. She is a rescue, we got her when she was 15 (one year ago) she came to us in bad shape and not known if she talked. I spent time with her before bringing her home, never to have heard her talk. I brought her home, bathed her, put her on top of her cage and when I tried to pick her back up, she attacked me, however she started yelling "I love you!!!!, what are you doing??? I love you!!!, what are you doing" I was standing there bleeding as she bit the crap out of me while yelling at me. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was very funny in retrospect. She is not a huge talker however when she is covered for the night she speaks in an "exorcist kind of voice" she says things that she has heard through out the day. Some days I will walk in and she will say so clearly, how are you? or what are you doing? She kisses lots, and makes many different noises. She seems to still be learning so I'm curious as to what she will know in a year from now. I have read that while they are one of the gentler amazons they are not the best talkers out of amazons. That said I think that all amazons are capable of speaking well. Go on You tube there are a number of lca's talking. You don't ever know however if the bird you get will be a talker, but yes I think they are all capable.

Having worked with the Lilac crowns a few time I find the very intelligent and like any other parrot some talk some don't the first bird that I know learned to speak because of me was a lilac he was in the pet store and I was doing computer stuff while he was on my shoulder and I heard him grumble something and I said you want a scratch-scratch? reached up and gave him a few seconds of scritches and went back to checking my e-mail when I heard in a very clear voice "Scratch! scratch!" well it was on from there he never shut up . A female I rescued never learned to talk but she can whistle anything you care to teach her and she was my first success in training to wear a harness I have talked to her owner who has had her for three years now and she still wears the harness and goes with the family everwhere on trips. Hope this helps you decide. ( oh and by rescued I mean I got her from a home where she was on a stool in a cage too small for her with two cats circling her cage she had never had a bath and only been taught to wolf whistle)

Yes the lilac crown amazon is a good talker just not as good as the YNA and the double yellow headed also the orange winged and blue fronted amazons are amazing talkers although most people say they are not but thats there own opinion as i have seen first hand how good both can talk but on topic the lilac crown tends to be more quiet than other amazon species hope this helped you

YC, YN and DYH are known to be the best talkers! OW and BF are often known to have quite a good talking ability.

They aren't known for their talking ability. I have never heard of one that was a really excellent talker. Some people have said they will talk a bit though. They do however have outstanding personalities. More laid back and even tempered than most amazons. They are usually the species I recommend most to people wanting an amazon that don't want to deal with the yellow headed attitude and aggression. If your in the market for an amazon and talking isn't a deal breaker for you, I'd very seriously consider the lilac crown.

Yellow Shouldered Amazon
Even if the are great talkers, some may never talk. That is a chance one takes when buying a parrot. Some are better know as talkers, but they may not talk either. My Sassy is a Yellow Shouldered Amazon. She talks fair to good. Not great as some Amazons. She is 13 inches long and so a smaller Amazon. I bought her because of her brilliant colors and she reminded me of a Double Yellow Headed Amazon. They both have light beaks and yellow on their heads. CDOG is right. You should never choose a parrot because of its talking ability. There needs to be a bond between you and the bird. Something more you like about it..

Thanks for all the responses. I am not getting a bird soley on talking abilities, if that were the case I would have never gotten by GCC. I love my birds and enjoy the company and entertainment. With that said I wanted to get an Amazon because of its beauty, personality and talking ability. I know owning birds is a big responsibility and commitment. But I enjoy our other boys so much I wanted to add to our household.

LCA are not known to be the best talkers but many do.If your starting with a baby(just weaned) your chances are good, older birds may or may not start to talk ,but if you start early your chances are better. Ladies and kids with higher pitched voices are the best bet for getting started. Use 2 syllable words and excited voice, sing song voice, etc. Hello is always a good place to start because they're excited to greet you. Cuss words are learned quickly because they are used with some exclamation,so use that to your advantage. Singing is a favorite with some birds but especially Napes. I wouldn't start off with whistling ,many birds won't progress beyond whistling if that's the first thing they learn. They seem to think that is the way to communicate and don't learn words as well,IMO. Good luck with the LCA they are great birds ,more laid back than many of the better talkers.

I have a lilac crowned parrot. Born May 18. They are not known as good talkers. They are known for being very sweet and affectionate, which mine is. Calmer than other Amazons.

I have a lilac crowned parrot. He was hatched May 18. He is on the verge of talking, "hello Chi Chi" and "Chi Chi is a pretty bird." He has the rhythm correct. They are not known as good talkers, but they are known for being calm and affectionate.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
My lilac crowned is 40 years old. I've heard her say "Hello" once in all the time I have had her. She is not a talker. She likes sounds. She likes whistles. She likes to hang out on your shoulder...

and she really, really, really likes FOOD! :D

Your best talkers are your DYH, Blue Fronts, and Napes... probably in that order.

My personal favorite are the Blue Front... :green: Huge personality birds!

If I had to rank them DYH and Blue Fronts would probably be first and second, as well as the biggest show-offs, and potentially, the most temperamental during breeding season. Napes and yellow crowns would be a close 3rd and 4th.

I have a lilac crowned parrot, a juvenile (hatched May 18th). He is a very good talker. Picks up what I repeat within a week or so. "Chi Chi is a pretty bird" "Give me a kiss" "I love you too" and "Chi Chi doesn't want a stupid cracker, you idiot."

And lilac crowned parrots have a reputation as being more calm and easy going than the other Amazons.
