Ok so about 2 weeks ago I received jade a 9 year old OWA. Let me tell you it has been very interesting. She seems too be doing well she is talking and inter acting with us more now she is also starting too eat more of her vegetables. She is on pellets and the previous owner always kep a seed mix available. I still can't get her too come out I put my hand in to have her step up and yOu can seen her about too lunge so I close the door. She will come out on her own a couple times a day if she feels like it. Is there any way that I can kinda help her want to be handled?? Or should I just continue to let her warm up to us on her own?? I just don't want to force anything or do the wrong thing. I also want to thank everyone who has replied too my posts I appreciate all of you sharing you experience and knowledge on this subject.

i would give her more time, but you can try having her step up on a hand help perch. It sounds like she would also benefit from clicker training. good luck, I'm sure she'll warm up in time :0).

Hey coalminer, i think i've responded to your other post. Don't remember the details.LOL Glad to hear she's eating better.I have a soft spot in my heart for OWAs. Your best chance at her wanting to be handled,,Make it something that is a reward,a treat !!! Don't keep trying so hard, wait til she shows an interest . Then only give brief moments, don't take her away from her cage. When she steps up ,put her right back down on her cage and tell her what a "good girl" she is. Leave her wanting more of your attention instead of her driving you away, which might be a hard habit/cycle to break. It won't be easy but it'll be worth it.

Just let her take things at her own pace:) Offer her treats and talk to her... eventually she will learn that you are someone she can trust! She will come to you when she feels comfortable with you :)

I recall getting Sassy home.. She did not want to come to me immediately. That first bite was terrible. Felt like a sludge hammer coming down on my finger. She would sit in the back of her cage and wait for me to put my finger in the cage. So I got smart.. I would open the cage and leave it opened. I would go about my morning routine peaking in every 5 minutes. She came out eventually and than I could handle her, either walking on sticks, than fingers, ect.. But after finding out that I was her new owner and main care giver, well she became easier to handle. They can tell a care giver by whom feeds them daily, whom handles them..

We got PaulE about this time last year (yellow crown) & he was supposed to be my husband's bird, except my husband worked nights/slept days at the time & I spent more time with PaulE than Bill did (and PaulE was used to a female companion).

Still, I needed to take him off his cage with a perch. He would step to perch & then to my hand. Every day, I would ask him to step up onto my hand & he would decline (and I would step him up with a perch). He was here 3 months before he stepped off his playtop to my hand.

I was beyond thrilled.

BUT to this day, when I take him out of his sleeping cage in the morning - he steps to the perch & then to my hand. Habit.

My other amazon steps directly to my hand & always has.

However much it feels like you've bonded in a few weeks, it is nothing to the trust that will develop in 3 months. Which is nothing like 6 months. Which is NOTHING compared to 1 year.

With parrots, patience is your friend.
