Seems like a gag reflex?

MC periodically will act like he's gagging. This isn't a daily or even a weekly occurrence. It's just random.

He did it a few times when he was going down the side of a long metal bell toy that he has on his play stand about a week or two ago. I thought maybe he just "liked" the toy. (I read these forums too much).:)

Tonight he did it on his perch after I put him back for bedtime. He hacks, and hacks, but nothing comes up. Sometimes he will tilt his head and look at me funny - his neck looks kind of thick and puffed up with his feathers. Or he will hold onto a toy in his cage with one foot and lean over with his beak being below the perch.

Do I need to call the vet about this? It's just odd and I really don't know what can be triggering the gag reflex in him. He had some treats tonight - cheerios and pumpkin seeds - just before I put him back in the cage.

it sounds like he us regurgetating. when he does it, I would just ignore it so as not to incourage it. if your worried, a vet check up could clear things up. good luck :)

If he's trying to mate with his toy ,then he might be trying to "allo feed" it also. Parrots will often feed their mate when bonding to show that they can be a good mate and feed the hen while she's setting eggs and young. He's showing that he can be a good provider. Both sexs will do this and it's very common. If you feel that his actions are something else ,take him to the vet. IMO he's looking for a mate.

My DYHA has been doing this and occasionally he will bring up a tiny amount of food into his beak, is this the same thing?? His prior owner said she's not sure that she remembers him doing this (but she didnt' handle him so not sure if she would've noticed)

That;s pretty normal IMO, my 42 yr old hen does it for me. Just means they love you.

That's awesome considering that he's only been with me for 3 weeks!! I think it really was love at first sight for both of us! He does things for me that his owner said she would NEVER be able to get him to do! Awwwww, my birdie baby loves me back!!! <3
