I am seriously considering bringing one into our household. I currently own a B&G macaw.

Anyway, I would like some advice from those who have multiple species of birds in their homes to help me with the decision. I would love to have one but if it's in the best interest of my macaw not to safety wise, I won't.

We have both as well, we don't have issues, but we also don't let them out at the same time. Both the GW's and Zon's are wonderful, just not at the same time is all.

You NEED to have time for both , this is the most important advice IMO.
It's very important to make both feel loved . Sometimes I take each one of my macaws into a separate room or go outside , so it's away from the other .
Ido t know if jealousy occurs between them ,but I would think it does being they are such smart beings. My Macaws can out on the same java tree and be fine . But never ever do I leave them unattended , too much can happen in such a short time !
I never let my TOOs out when the Macaws are out either. One bite could be deadly.

As long as you give them individual time and play with you , there shouldn't be any problems. Except for the calling.......if the windows are open and I'm out back with Baby,
I can hear Stella calling. I think she is calling for me to take her out , but she could be just as well calling for Baby. And Baby calls back LOUDLY , lololol.
But when I have Stelly out ,she doesn't call back to Baby , go figure , lol.
Just remember the noise volume and intensity will be much more then you have now, Amazons can call very loud , I know , I had a YNA. When they get excited , it's very
loud, lolol. And with a BG , oh boy are you in for it ,lolol.
My guys get into it if they hear birds outside ,like the crows , etc....
It other then those times ,they are fairly quite I must say....when we come or should I say when I come home, they all join in welcoming me ,lolol. My husband always comments how quite it was till I got home , lololol. Oh well :):):):)

Please post pictures of your YNA if you do bring one home to join your family.
I would love to see them :).

I'm sure you know vet bills ,food bills , toys , not as much as a Macaw because they aren't as destructive , will rise . My Zon loved the music boxes , lol.

How about room ,do you have the room fr another fairly large cage ?
If you have all of the above figured out , then your good to go. :):):):)

It has been at least 15 years since I have had an amazon parrot and a lot has changed since then. I remember the noise in the mornings and evenings. I knew macaws can be loud but this one is not as loud as expected. I am wondering if the calling is instinctive or learned?

As for space, if there is something I want bad enough, I will find a way to make room. lol.

Instinctive , yeah, some is learned but if you have multiable birds then there tends to be more of it.I have a house full of zons and it only takes one to set them all off. We have a lot of yacking in the AM and again in the PM, or when you get home after being gone. About adding a zon ,,,, if you were adding a very young zon (say a male) , then it might depend more on how your macaw reacts. In any event i would plan for them not getting along and then be happy with any situation better than that. But this could be said about most any of the larger parrots. Both birds being well socialized at an early age would greatly improve your chance of success. If either one was a oneperson bird i wouldn't even try. We know they all have individual personalities but IMO your chances are better with 2 new world birds like zon/macaw. PS have you considered the possiblity of them bonding to each other and not wanting anything to do with you? How old/long have you had the macaw? Something else, is it you and the SO ? or do you have a large active house hold? The larger/active the household(flock) the better of the chance of 2 birds getting along.

We got our YNA about a month or so ago. We already had a Quaker and a GCC. We don't have them out at the same time. The only real loud time as everyone else has said is more in am and pm (mainly pm). My Quaker is a screamer (especially when I leave the room) but my YNA is not a screamer at all. Actually neither is our GCC. We make separate time for each one and they seem to be doing good.

The calling tends to be very individualistic in amazons. My males are quieter than my females. If you ignore them when they call, it likely won't be too bad with a single amazon. Mine like to make abnoxious noises in the morning and then againin the evening. With a whole flock of birds here, they can carry on for quite a while. My first amazon was given up by her last home for screaming issues. She could really scream and carry on for 30 minutes or so at a time a few times a day. However, after a few months of ignoring her and only letting her out when she was quiet, she got a lot better. Normal for her is about 5-10 minutes of screaming 0-2 times a day. Her babies that I've kept back are far more vocal. They get each other going and while its not all out screaming, the obnoxious noises can carry on for a while. People who live quiet life styles have quieter amazons. If you have other noisy birds, or the people in your home talk loud, play loud music etc, you'll have a noisier amazon.

They can be aggressive toward other birds. While I would think a macaw should be able to take care of itself when confronted with an amazon, someone is likely to still come out the loser. The plus side is that most of my yellow napes stay on their gym or play stand despite being fully flighted. They generally aren't likely to fly off and go looking for trouble unless something spooks them and they happen to land on another bird's cage. This means that if you are able to do separate playgyms, out of reach of each other, and you don't have any major goals that they somehow be friends, then chances are good it will work out okay. Just don't expect to have them both sitting on the couch with you at the same time. Plan on totally separate one on one time, separate gyms etc. If they prove to be decent around each other then you got lucky.
