allergies

Hi everyone. Lupin, my BF Amazon was making a weird after scream honk on intakes of breath a few months ago. Antibiotics did not clear it so the vet put him on antifungals. He did seem to get a little better but we could still hear those funny congested sounds. Anyhow, the vet did a blood test and it showed no signs of asper or of him ever being exposed to it. However, it did show that he had allergies. The vet gave me a few anti histamines for me to give him. However, we cant give him these constantly. He does not act ill at all but just sounds a little congested. We also do not know what he is allergic too. We are very happy that he does not have asper but am wondering if anyone else here has a parrot with allergies and what do they do to help their feathered friend? I think that he could even be allergic too the dust from our pet cockatiel Lili, but we do use a air purifier to try and help. Any advice would be great. I live in the uk and vets do not know much about parrots who suffer from allergies here.

I don't know much else you can do other than the air purifier. i assume you know about carpet cleaner,candles,cleaning supplies,air freshners,house hold molds,etc.

Hi. I live on the West coast of wales in a town called Aberystwyth. Yeah, I have not used any carpet cleaner and use f10 to pretty much clean everything around the house. I don't use any air freshners and don't even use spray deodrants but use roll on instead. I suspect that he has an allergy to the cockatiels dust!

You can try bathing the birds more often, especially the cockatiel. Your zon may benefit from being in the bathroom while someone takes a hot shower.

If not your tiel, look at other things in the house. Does anyone smoke? Have you brought in any new items into the house that might off-gas? (furniture in particular) What about food? Any new foods? Or any foods he's already eaten that may have gone bad?

If it's a recent change, you may be able to pinpoint it quickly. If it's something that's been occurring for a while, it may take longer.

MY bird, I am assuming has allergies to corn, as we switched her diet around,and I noticed the one thing increasing each time was corn, I also realized the worst her over preening got. We are getting her new food delivered Wednesday. It's RoudyBush Rice Diet, which is completely allergy free, which helps any one with a a food allergy. The only problem is that they can have nothing but the rice pellets and rice treats for 10 weeks straight, but after that you can start adding foods back to find what they were allergic to.
