Plants/Trees for indoor cage
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a large tree or plant that we could put in our Charlie's cage? She's an orange-winged Amazon and she's on her own in a 6ft x 5.5ft x 2.5ft cage inside. We wanted something that she could either sit in and look gorgeous or more likely eat and rip apart to her hearts content, but that won't be dangerous for her. Anyone know of anything? What do other people have? Thank you! |

I prefer herbs. Basilica can be pretty big.
Thyme, parsley, oregano, lemon balm and lemon thyme is also very good for them.

How about a Gardenia? They look pretty, smell heavenly if the flower, and get to be a good size, too.
Grape Ivy and spider plants are other options.

Re: Plants/Trees for indoor cage
I cut safe trees and give them the branches. For something green to eat ,i grow small dishes with grass (rye works good). If your wanting to put a plant in a pot inthe cage don't buy something from the store or nursery (too many chemicals) grow something like hibiscus and rotate them in and out of the cage. hard to find a good plant that grows fast indoors. I would rotate safe plants that i grew , maybe put rocks on top of the dirt to keep them out of that.

Re: Plants/Trees for indoor cage
For my indoor forest, I use cottonwood and mulberry as well as a type of willow (which name currently escapes me) I have a large list of non toxic plants and trees but sadly the book it is in is on loan otherwise I'd give you the list.

Re: Plants/Trees for indoor cage
One thing to watch Jottlebot is that the lists of safe plants found on the internetwebthingy have names which differ from country to country. So when you look up sycamore it tells you it is safe but when your parrot gets sore feet and you start researching you find that the English sycamore is actually a maple tree which is only safe with the bark removed.
Unfortunately the list makers did not see fit to include the latin names which could have prevented the confusion. |
