Can two species cohabit in one cage?

Yellow Crowned - Male - 13 yrs in his big cage (1st parrot from birth to 13).
Orange Winged - Female - 2 1/2 in a little cage (2nd parrot new addition)

We bought a very large parrot cage and we have now transferred the male in it and we have put the female (still in her little cage) in the larger cage.

How long shall we wait before it is safe for Randy to accept the new parrot?

Will we be able to let new parrot share Randy's cage and remove the little cage altogether?

I read that you are not suppose to mix species so I am not sure...

You should wait a month to begin with before introducing them period! Just to make sure your new arrival is healthy and all. It's not wise to put any species together unless they get along, even with the same specie. But when it comes to mating time you might deal with major issues of them mixing and they can become mean towards you.

Personally I would NOT let them share the same cage, no matter the size. You have a boy + a girl, and the possibility exists that they will bond STRONGLY. Well, we all know what boys and girls have on their mind as they get older, and mixing 2 different Amazons should be avoided IMHO.

Of course they may cohabit peacefully, but only if they form a bond.

I have a 13 year old Yellow Nape female and a 5 month old Double Yellow Head male. I do allow them to interact on the playtree - supervised - and yes, they get along fine, but I will never put them in the same cage, as my male will eventually mature, and I'd like to avoid any possible aggression. Once my male matures, I already know that their "interaction" will be quite limited and there won't be ANY interaction with my female during breeding season. I may actually have to move him into another room during that time, but that remains to be seen.

Of course all this is only my opinion. Your birds may certainly get along, but why would you want to encourage a bond between 2 different species if you are not intending to breed them?

What is your goal? Are you looking for breeders? Are these pets? What happens when they take to each other? they don't want you, put them in separate cages?Zons are happiest with their mate. You can't imagine two more miserable birds. She;s going to lay even if you keep him from fertilizing them. Please don't hybridize. If you want pets, keep the bonds bird to person and be careful.
