Vacation help!!

We rescued a 10 yr bf about three months ago from a womans well house who was afraid and convinced the zon had turned on ALL women! In three months he has changed so much I am a woman and he actually lets me love on him quite often of course not as much as my hubby gets to but compared to when we first got him its a miracle I can touch him...here's the trouble we are goin to be goin on vacation for 5 days..in that time he will get to stay with my parents who will shower him with attention but even with that I am nervous that leaving him will take his trust and we will lose all we have gained...what do u guys think I am his 3rd home!!!

Re: Vacation help!!

If any bird can handle it,,,it would be a zon. I think he'll be fine.

Re: Vacation help!!

Parrots have good memories. I think that he will be fine as long as someone with your distinguishing features doesn't do something like scare him or do something bad to him. (Which isn't very likely) I'm sure he will have fun at your parents house! Also if you parents have a phone what helped for me when I was worried about my bird was to call or text my bird-sitter for an update. Hope this helps!

Re: Vacation help!!

Truth be known, it would good for him. Socialization is super important to their overall well being. Only having him for 3 months ,some change would make him welcome in a larger "flock". Not a bad thing. Yes they love routine, but i'm always changing things up for my fids. It's only 5 days, I wouldn't worry. Zons are pretty tough cookies. He'll stay mad for a day when you get back, but then you can do no wrong.

Thank u so much! That makes me feel so much better! I'd love for him to become more social! It's funny only 3 months and they are such a strong part of your family. Can't imagine life without him now!!

Re: Vacation help!!

We adopted our blue front when he was about 10, were told he HATED women (not true), and we are also his 3rd home (how's that for a coincidence!) We've taken a couple vacations in the 5 years we've had him, and I will admit, he's a bit upset with us for a few days when we get home, but he gets over it. I don't think any animal likes being left in an unfamiliar environment, especially parrots who form strong bonds with their perceived "flock". However, while he may be a bit pouty for a few days, rest assure he will be thrilled you came back for him. When you leave him, be sure he has his favorite toys, regular food, cage cover he's used to ect...so he won't be so uncomfortable. Also be sure your parents know to feed him fresh fruits and veggies daily (many people who don't own parrots don't realize they eat more than seed), and that they know his "schedule" of what time he's put to bed and woken up. And don't forget to give him some extra love and attention when you get home.

Re: Vacation help!!

I've left Pixel with my younger sister at my parents house twice. I introduced her to them and the house first (actually stayed the weekend with her at their house). Both times I left her, by all accounts she had a blast, and was showered with attention (and maybe a few too many grapes).

And both times when I came back from my trip she was pretty excited to see my back, and hasn't held any grudge nor decided she likes my family more than me.

I now take her with me if I visit my family for a weekend, and she's always there to soak up the attention. She's less afraid of new people now, too, so it seems to have been a positive experience for her.
