Red Lored Amazon
I adopted this little guy a few weeks ago and he's just the sweetest thing! Well, I can say that now, I haven't had him out of the cage yet. But he's trying to feed me, loves to have his head and now his back rubbed, has no problem with me changing his food and water or cleaning his cage.... And this after the previous owner said he would bite the sh** out of me if I put my hand in the cage.

Unlike the big Amazons I've had, he is quiet! He also has a very cute little chitter chatter he does to himself as he trundles around, playing with toys and chewing up the cardboard egg cartons I give him to play with.

He can and does yell sometimes, but it's actually fairly rare. And it's not really screaming, as much as making an odd noise that I can't quite recognize, either because he's doing it so loudly or because he never really quite got the hang of it.

I swear he did a car alarm the other day.

His talking is very indistinct, but I am hoping with attention and love that will change.

He does a stellar chicken, though!

So I was hoping to connect with another Red Lored owner to learn more about the behavior and traits that are typically Red Lored. And to distinguish those from Buddy just being Buddy.

Red Lord Amazon
Hi, I'm a proud Dad to a 25+ year old Red Lord named Miss Red, I've had her all most of her life she was about 3 when I got her, now if you want to talk about a screamer, when she want to scream just to scream she can be heard 4 houses away it seem she enjoys the noise she makes, its not a every day thing its more when the sun is out and she just want to tell the world how happy she is, she will sit for hours and talk to her self or sit on my lap when I'm on the computer and fall a sleep, Red will talk when she feels like it but making odd noise is her thing she will make ticking sound like a clock she has only learn one bad word thanks to a room mate she like to use the f word so now when she does I say Truck in hopes she will say that and not the other word, she has learn to call the dog so she can chase it around, she loves popcorn for a snack at night and has learn were I keep it so she will sit and stare at until I give her some.
You will in time learn what her yelling is for, Red had a yell when she wants me to play with her and one for feed me and one just to be a pain she thinks its funny to get me into the room and then play like she sleeping.
I bet the reason he does not bite you is because he knows you love him and will take care of him, feeding you is his way of showing love.
Red was in her cage for all most a month before she ever came out and now a cage is for sleeping in or when I'm not around and loves the world I hear it every morning when I clean her cage she just one happy kid
in time you baby should talk better and learn how to make big noises

I haven't been in here for a while, but it sure is nice to get some replies!

I have found that Red Loreds are an endangered species in the wild so they are rather rare even in captivity.

Buddy is now Bucky, an even better name. That's because his most favorite thing is doing his chicken noise. I love it, it's sooo funny!

I bet there aren't any other 'zons here that make raven noises!

I spent a lot of time, since about July 1, getting to know him, pet him, feed him by hand, etc. before taking him out of the cage the first time yesterday.

He did GREAT! And stepped politely on my hand the first time, and rode around the room on my arm. He's a rescue as I said, so he's had more trauma than a little 4-yr old guy really needs!

I'm pretty sure he's a male, as he has very golden eyes. They say the males get those golden eyes and the females have darker eyes. It doesn't matter, of course, but it's nice to feel at least fairly certain.

Gotta do another big furniture moving deal, to move his cage away from the window, as winter is coming and it will be too drafty cold for him there. Living in a small cabin in Alaska has its challenges for birdies!

looking for male red-lored amazon

Hi,
I have a 15 year old red-lored amazon female, and I'm looking for a companion for her. I'm interested in an adult male. I would prefer hand-tame and friendly (of course :)
I'm in Canada. Please let me know if you know of a male who needs a new loving home :)

Cheers,

Helene

I am a new owner of 4 red lored amazon baby parrots. I wasn't planning on doing this but when a young man showed up at my door with a paper bag full of birds, figured they were better of with me then in a bag. We live in Mexico and this happens often. I'm a sucker for poor defenseless animals of all types.

Merlin a Red Crowned Amazon
I have a 4 yr old male red lored named Merlin. He is a great talker, even putting together phrases on his own. "Bad Bird & Here Dawg became Bad Dawg" lol Merlin is fully flighted & only spends time in his cage @ night & when I'm not home. I got him @ 7 months old & he was talking when we got him. The kids @ the pet shop had taught him several very bad words, but we ignored them & he hasn't said them in a long time. Wonder if they'll come up again? He is very loving, but I have to ask permission b4 I'm allowed to scratch his head. He does need alot of attention, we own a restaurant & I'm away from home too much. My husband & I are working on that, I'm afraid to take him w/us because of his flying. I have debated clipping his wings, I know that he would be safer, but I just can't bring myself to do it. He sits in front of the mirror, flaps his wings & says "Merlin Flies". I do tend to get too involved w/my pets, this might be my problem, not Merlins. He does have a loving home with people who really try to think on his level. His "dawg" spends time w/him when we away.
