I already had 2 other parrots and went to look at this bird with a fiend just to check out why they where selling such a young bird with cage for so cheep. When we got there I found a parrot with what looks to be a damaged / over growth beak. He was on seed only in a bedroom in a tiny cage. I pulled the $100 out of my wallet grabbed the bird and cage and left. You see my TAG Spirit is missing the upper hook of his beak and I know I could help this guy. He could not even shut his mouth all the way....

As soon as I got home I got my trimmers out and started to work. The beak will never be right but at least he can use it know. The cage is way to small. that needs to be fixed right away but here are my questions.

How long should I let Danny settle into the house before getting him a new cage?

Should I switch pellets over as fast as I can or should i take a month or so?

I was told this bird hatted people. He is sitting on my knee as I type asking for head pets. :green1:

Amazon's are amazing and probably take changes better than other birds.
I would wait a few weeks or a month before changing cages. As for Pellets I would introduce them into the diet but don't take the old stuff away yet, do a gradual switch And see how he handles it. And I'm sure your already introducing healthy veggies, fruits ans nuts.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for giving an older zon a new home. I'll be glad to help. I'd take it slow , not too many changes at once. A new cage in a couple of weeks would be good. I'd start training him to get weighed and weigh him ever AM before feeding. This will help when you wean him on too pellets. Start giving him a pellet as a treat and see what he likes.Like Ms Sandy said, fresh veggies/fruit is a must. Make a big deal out of you eating it and see if he takes an interest. Good luck and hope to see you two around. Loads of good info in the older threads.

He got bannana for the first time today. He was sure it was poison. Kept offering it and he lunged and got a mouth full, grabbed the rest and eat some before tossing it to floor.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I was browsing Craigslist last night out of boredom and came across his ad! I recall seeing him in that tiny cage with a tiny round mirror with a blue rim, maybe one other toy and his dishes! I felt so sorry for him!

Thank you for taking him in! He is actually a Red Lored Amazon and he's going to take some work! (health wise)

IMO, I'd say to get a new cage immediately! Set the cage up next to his old cage and fill it up with perches and toys! Then leave both cages open and allow him to choose which one to live in!

Start getting him onto a healthier diet immediately, but don't go cold turkey! His beak may never be normal, but it can definitely be better! So glad you've already started the process!

Are there any vets in Redding that treat parrots? If so, I think getting some blood work on him would be a good idea.

OMG!!! How the heck do people let this stuff happen to birds??? I have a Red-Lored also. They mostly seem to be the nicest Amazons I come across. Great work for stepping up and then getting to work!!

He's a beauty! I see the nails are pretty long too. Poor guy just never got the kind of care he needed and deserved!

The nails are next. After removing so much beak I wanted to give him a break. I am amazed out how much he just wants to sit with me. He is on the arm of the chair right now singing to me and talking up a storm.

You are doing a WONDERFUL thing with him!!! I have goosebumps, your story truly touched me! :) That poor baby was utterly neglected, and with you he will have a brand new lease at life.

I agree with getting him to a vet if possible. The vet may even be able to use a dremel to get the beak growing into the right direction. I also believe the beak may, over time, be completely normal again.

WOW - you are a brave and awesome person for giving him the chance he deserves!

I KNOW~ I totally teared up when I read that they told you he hates people, but he was sitting on your knee asking for scritches. PRECIOUS! I'm just so thankful there are people like you who jump in and do what's right. Really wonderful.

Well morning weigh in got me bit hard! I guess the scale looked deadly. Our Danny Boy will be going on a exercise and food habit over haul. He wieghed in at a hefty 550g. His breakfast of apple, bannana and egg is being gleared at with mistrust as I type.

Yep, there is a thread on here titled "Doesn't like new anything!" that I could totally relate to. George is super suspicious of anything new - toys, foods, cages. I only got him to eat pellets by putting them in his old "trusted" food cup and putting his seed mix in a new cup to the side. He just couldn't fathom using the new cup and decided eating pellets was the lesser of two evils. They are funny to figure out. Sorry you got bit - Amazons pack quite a punch! I'm sure he's sorry...

Your choice of words has me cracking up!!! LOVE your sense of humor!!

I guess Danny Boy will join Weight Watchers for Amazons, yes? :D

Aww poor boy. I'm sure you will get lots of mistrusting looks as he tries things for the first time. Soon that will change to joy and excitement over new adventures.
It's so wonderful that you took him in and giving him a chance at a wonderful life.

I agree with a quick vet visit. the overweight, all seed diet and overgrown beak would make me want to check his liver. Maybe get some milk thistle seed, which is good for the liver JIC, my guys love them! Some vitamin A too!

I'm sure after all the fuss with his beak trim he needed a break. I usually give mine showers after nail trims to cool them and calm them. ;)

Definitely check his liver. When I worked at a pet store and people were eyeing the birds I always said "there is no inexpinsive bird, add on $300-$600 and you have the first vet check up", I'm sad to say only one person ever brought their bird to a vet after purchase, and it was a kind older lady who bought a green cheek conure. She even brought him to the avian vet it recommended.

He really needs a vet, abdmormal beaks are alarms going off when I comes to parrot health. That and being overweight and his overall ruffled appearance.

If you can't afford it start a donation pool in your area, see if anyone will donate to help him.

Well there is no avian vet in my area. I am looking at a 4 hour trip to Sacramento or San Francisco or hold out for a month and see the traveling vet when he does his twice yearly trip through. That is who sees my other birds.

As of right now I am sick to my stomach and pissed at my self. When I came home from a toy and perch run I found that breakfast was eaten and tossed nicely all over the cage and floor. Looking around I noticed the seed cup that was toped off with sunflowers by last owner was untouched. I pull it out to poke and see what all was in there. It was moldy just under the sunflowers and packed soild with mold and wild bird seeded.....I should of pulled it and looked yesterday. How this bird is even alive.

Oh my god, that food bowl is terrible. Were you busy? I switch out dry food daily. That last owner disgust me :(

If I was in your place I would drive the 4 hours, that way you can go to a vet who specializes in parrots. After that you can have the records and use them when the traveling vet comes by for reference. For the birds is one of the best avian vets in the Bay Area, she is a bird only vet. I understand it's very out of the way, but I don't know if your bird could wait a month. She(the vet) is passionate about birds, I would recommend you at least call and see if you can set up a phone appointment to see what she thinks you should do. She may even be able to recommend a closer vet, or collaborate with your traveling vet.
