Hi all, I would like to know if anyone out there has an Amazon and a gcc? I'm looking at adopting a blue front, but I know from his history that another small bird flew on his cage and he attacked (10 years ago). He is with other Amazons in an outdoor flight and is not aggressive to them, but the size difference is major for what could be my two. What would you all suggest to keep my Rio as safe as possible if I get him? Thanks!

I would suggest not to have them out at the same time at least not till you get to know them. Even then very close supervision. 2 birds of different sizes is always a risk. If you get him and either one flies to the top of the others cage you can always use a towel on the top to not risk toes.

Hi Riosmom, I was in the same predicament as your situation. I asked my breeder what bird would be a better fit to coexist with my flock a Panama Amazon or a Yellow Collared Macaw. The breeder suggested to stick with the YCM.

This is not to discourage you on your decision but some food for thought, peace.

I agree with SandyBee that you probably wouldn't want to have them out together, especially unsupervised. My amazon and conure are both sweet birds, but I could see the Henry (the amazon) biting Jade (the conure) if Jade was being too friendly and got to close (Henry is a coward and scared of the little bird!).

There is also a green cheek amazon (aka red-fronted amazon, the type of bird Henry is) so at first I thought you were asking if a GCA could get along with BFA... which I would have answered yes. :)

I have both a GCC and a BFA. My BFA tries to feed her all the time and will sit and watch her (cages next to eachother) but my GCC will attack him if he gets too close. I used to have them out together and still will on occasion, but I have to supervise them very carefully. My GCC is the instigator for sure!

Thanks for the replies...I appreciate the advice! I know that Rio has a big personality and would probably instigate, but with the previous experience with the BFA I don't think I would have them out together. Right now I am just letting the BFA get to know me and vice versa...since I volunteer at the rescue it helps in the process. I sing to him and his new favorite phrase is C'mere!

Volunteering at a rescue is a great way to get to know the BFA before you adopt! And birds at rescues will often choose their new owner... a lucky opportunity most birds don't get!

I would suggest keeping them in a different room. One of the first days I had my female yellow nape home, she spooked and flew on top of my quaker cage. Being the idiot territorial quaker he is, he charged at her and she picked him up by the neck and threw him on the floor. He was fine minus a few feathers, however that amazon went on to do some attempted attacks at my much larger cockatoo. She is just bird aggressive. And yet, she has a mate of her own kind she is fine with. Some amazons you just have to assume that if contact is made, it will be aggressive and potentially life threatening.

Wow i would have said a Panama was as good a "second" bird you could ever hope to find. I 've never seen one aggressive to other birds and IMO are the very best pet bird. All of mine can "share" with the other birds and are never the cause of trouble in the flock. They are usually the "police" and let you know when someone else is up to no good. See many Pans in rescue???

Hi HenPecked, thanks for your feedback. Maybe the breeder was looking at size of the birds I have. They are all pretty small really. But I do highly respect your expertise on amazons.

So now I guess I am having 2nd thoughts..... I do have til next summer to make up my mind. However I thought it would be best to put down a deposit around winter so I can secure a baby.

Hen Pecked If I did go with a Panama then should I get a male? I read males are more vocal and make funny sounds vs females. The panama is not in the hot 3 category. So I figured it would be safe to with a male.

The bird next year would be my past bird so I wanted it to be special. So any feed back from you will be greatly appreciated, peace.

You can't go wrong with a true Pan. IMO males don;t talk any better than hens, More "vocal" ? Yes. (best talker i ever saw was a hen Pan). If i where to ever have another amazon baby for a pet it would be a hen Pan, but my hen nape won;t stand for that.

Well I have already chosen the name Garfield so I will be leaning towards the male Panama. I will keep this decision privately and just surprise my breeder around winter.

My heart thanks you Hen Pecked but my wallet does not, lol. The Panama will cost me $1400 vs YCM $800. However this is my last bird so who cares, right? Thanks once again, peace.

For that price and an early deposit, i'd get my choice of babies, Good luck , i know it will work out. I'd pick personality over gender.

Wow, thanks for all of the advice today and the great discussion! I was at the rescue today learning to give tours and then we tore apart our powder room...

There aren't any Panama Amazons at the aviary, but lots of U2's and Amazons. I would love a caique as well, but only one at the rescue is in sanctuary. I love the attitudes of amazons...they make me smile!

Hi Rios Mom, I love Amazons as well. They are the closest thing to a African Grey far as clear human talking ability.

I would love to have the famous Grey but their dander and my nose are straight enemies, lol.

The first time I heard a Amazon talk was when I was in a Petco. A beautiful DYH Zon was on or near the cash register. The bird was talking to the customers. I left that day shocked to hear such clear speech from a parrot.

You mentioned that the rescue center did not have any Pans. Well Hen Pecked was dead on when he stated that type of Amazon is rarely given up. Well all the best in your search, peace.
