Amazon recovering from losing toe HELP please!

My yellow naped amazon Wordy got her toe stuck in her cage severing it off completely today. I was able to take her into the emergency vet and they stitched it up, put a ball bandage on it, and fitted her with an e collar to be worn for the next ten days. They sent me home with some antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory pain medication. Now, I have her at home in a large clear plastic container. Does anyone have any tips for helping her adjust to the bandage and the collar? She is very frustrated and just wants to bite and chew everything in her reach including the collar itself. Also, she hasn't been wanting to eat or drink in the few hours since we got home from the vet, how do I encourage her to eat while she is so distressed? I just don't know how she is going to make it through this recovery, anyone with experience please help my poor little girl!

I haven't been in your spot before but my first instinct would be to offer her any of her favorite foods just to get her to begin eating. Is she out of the plastic box now or is she supposed to stay in it?

If it were my bird I would let them sit in my lap and try feeding the yummiest of foods offered warm from my fingers.

I'm sorry to hear of Wordys traumatic injury. That must have been very scary for both of you.

Remember to remain calm yourself to help her to also be calm.

When she calms down she will eat & she will drink.....I had a conure lose his toe because he wouldn't stay off a neighbor's cage...he got stitched & bandaged, but the next day he was walking around on the foot, climbing & swinging...no major problems & he took his own bandage off two days later and within 5 days he'd chewed off his stitch...never worrying with the healed injury.....

I think that because mobility is a much greater part of a bird's life than for we humans, they are more adept at overcoming these types of situations much better than we are.....in the wild, if this happened & she was not able to keep up with the flock, she would be left behind, so there is an inherent need to tough it out and go on.....

While my conure left the vet's office without an attitude and without a collar, I'm pretty sure he was enjoying his happy juice.....

I think I would just leave her alone tonight & maybe she'll be hungry & thirsty in the morning.....

The eating and drinking should return to "normal" in a couple of days. Don't worry , your amazon will adapt just fine. That's what;s so great about amazons. They are so good at adjusting . If he's a cuddle bug ,then cuddle him. Attention from you will help him get though this tough time.
