Rocky was 2 in May is he to young to be going through the hormonal phase? he does for some reason loves to get under a towel or a blanket and he acts like he is regeratating but nothing comes up , today I had him sitting on my lap while I was watching tv and all of a sudden his feathers go up and he runs up my chest and bites the crap out of me on my nose , I didn't react but omg did it ever hurt , I calmly got up and put Rocky back on his playstand then ran to the bathroom and got a wet wash clothe to catch the blood , I bled for a good 2 hours on and off and this isn't the first time , he bit me a few weeks ago right on my wrist and left a good bruise for a few days , I know amazons are moody but just out the blue ? any advice would be helpful ty

That's the reason why my birds are not allowed to go up my shoulders or try to get anywhere close to my face. That is something you need to think about blocking them with a stick, I usually have a training stick handy near by if I needed it. Sometimes they would do it out of the blue for no apparent reason as it's not always about hormones. But of course hormones do play part of the role for being aggressive....you probably upset him by his reasons which can be anything. Not paying attention, my birds will nip me.

I seriously doubt Rocky has any hormonal issues if he just turned 2. :)

They can be little stinkers sometime, and you won't always know what set them off. Maybe he didn't like the TV show? LOL.

Hey, at least you noticed he was agitated ("his feathers went up"), so that's a good indicator Rocky wasn't running up to give kisses. Sorry about your nose. OUCH!!

RM, maybe a couple of pics would give us an idea what we might encounter, should we be similarly confronted by any of our birds......

You didn't, by chance, just have any new facial jewelry installed/changed, did you ? ? ?

I'm sure I can't imagine how that must have felt ! ! !

I agree with Wendy, that he's too young for hormones. You've just got a teenager on your hands. Sometimes they can "play" too hard, get a little over excited. If he was "playing" with his siblings like that, one of them would bite him back and let him know that's not acceptable. I'm not sure how the "positive enforcement" crowd would handle it but i would let him know it hurts and you don't like it. I probably wouldn't bite him back . I would fuss at him ,say "NO" in a stern voice, something. He needs to know some boundaries, your boundaries. "Nip it in the bud" if you see things headed in that direction again.

Never had a two year old zon so I have no personal experience with their behavior but I would venture a guess that it wasn't 100% out of the blue. Was it already night when this happened? Could he have been hungry for his dinner? Were you touching him? Does he have pins? Was there something that could be considered upsetting or threatening going on the TV (like loud noises, shooting, screaming, etc). Think about it and see if there was something you missed because they would nip us hard to let us know we are hurting them (as in pins) or when we miss their schedule or even warm us of danger and we often miss the trigger because it's something that we don't even register...

I was playing with him about 30 minutes before this happened so maybe he was in excite mode , my girlfriend came over today and every single time she comes over Rocky gets super excited , she was talking to him and I was going to put in on the tree he was on his cage and all his feathers went up and he tried to lunge and bite me , this is how he is every time she comes over no matter where he is in the house so whats going on with that?

Sounds like he sees your GF as an intruder, someone he has to share you with. :)

How does he behave when you take him to a different room in the house, one he isn't so familiar with?

My Sun Conure is 7 now. Around the time he was 2 he was a bit bitey too.
He is also overly protective of me. I should say was. I got him before I was married, and he loved me, but now he loves my husband more, and from time to time lounges at me if i get too close to him(husband).

When I am alone with the bird, and we are enjoying each others' company he will sometimes nip at me, but that is his way of saying that he either has to go poop or needs something and he had enough of me. (our bird is potty trained, I am so proud of that/him)

On the other hand.. since hormones had been mentioned... He does regurgitates alot. I know that is the sign of affection. But his ritual consist of: preening first of me or my husband, then regurgitation, and then he starts to hump. I don't want to buy another bird, i know that's not going to fix the problem. IS there a better way to break that habit, other than just not letting him do that?

Was the GF there when he bit you?? Trust me, he doesn't want to share his daddy. With zons, it's "if you can't bite the one you want,, bite the one your with", LOL. My very loving hen of 43 yrs just bit the crap out of me for walking too close to another hens cage. She would never hurt me if she had the chance to think about it. But she wants to run that other bird (rival) away so bad she would bite her own self. I'd suggest not getting too close when the GF is around . I would suggest getting the GF to interact with him when YOUR not around. My hen zon is no longer "jealous" of my wife, they've made friends. Socialize, socialize, socialize.
