Does anybody here own a magna double yellow head? I was surfing CL for a DYH and wondered if anybody would know if they had a magna just by looking at it. Are they really rare and can only be acquired through a breeder? I sure would like to have one. :32:

Wish i did, that and a Tres maria. There's a Tres Maria outside of a local store who is a sweet heart and so pretty.

Have a look at my Avatar. That was Quincy, a Magna. And in my signature is Sam, he's also a Magna, but he's still VERY young, just now a little over a year :)

They are magnificent birds, no doubt about it.

I can post more pictures, if you like.

See I would not know one if it was right in front of me and I have always admired yours. Lol. Yes, please post more pictures. I would like to add one more bird to my flock and it will be a DYH. I surf the Internet, but would love an older one. For it to be a magna would be icing on the cake. Most birds I have seen are under 10 years old. I really would like to see a comparison between the common DYH and a magna as they mature just so I am more educated about what I am looking at because now they look the same. By looking at pictures and looking at the amount of yellow on the head, what should I be looking for?

Magnas are "supposed" to be a bit bigger than DYH, have extensive red and yellow on their shoulders, and in mature birds, the yellow extends over their entire head, and yellow thighs.

This is my Sam. He's right around 1 in these pictures:

And this was my Quincy (Sam's full brother)

Thank you for the link for the magnas. It's incredible to see how much color it has at such a young age compared to a standard double yellow head. I have never seen one such as those pictured.

He doesn't look to be a Magna. His entire head should be yellow at 8 years.

Please remember, there is still much controversy whether Magna is a valid subspecies. Some believe a Magna is no other than an Amazona ochrocephala oratrix, who is possibly from a different region.

Double Yellow-headed Amazon Parrot (Amazona oratrix)

You can also check out THIS site. They are breeders of Magnas, and their 2 pairs are truly magnificent. :)

If I find one on the internet, I'll post it up and see what the consensus is. It would be cool to find a magna close to home. Where did you find yours?

Looking at the pictures, it looks like the Tres Marie is larger bird than the Magna.

Got enough, Jakiepoo would kill me if i brought home another pet and So would my wife. I'm working on the Blue mutation Napes,Should have babies in about 6-7 yrs. Can't have it all, have to draw the line somewhere. I would take in that Tres maria when that lady sells her store, I'm first on that list. I'll have to go down there and get you a pic of her.

I am very fascinated by this tread and learning so much about these special parrots. On of my favorite aspects about this form is others willingness to share information and not be stingy about it. LOL.

I wish I had the room for a bigger parrot and just might of considered a larger amazon but we are going to go with the smaller Panama with their plumpy looking bodies and long legs. LOL. Their temperament and size are a better match and it is my hope to be able to qualify the Panama for pet therapy. I am really itching to get back involved in that.

All these posts and information make it hard to stick with my decision though. Please keep them coming with pictures and differences between the two sub-species please. How fascinating and wonderful.

Well, my Quincy was a gift from my GF when she was going through a very difficult time. She bred Amazons and she bought many baby birds from a lady in south Texas, and that's where both Quincy and Sam were hatched. :)

AMAZONS

The experts must be blind. There is a big difference if you examine the two species long enough.

Wendy, if you ever have to rehome your dyh, I will be honored to take it. hehe.

See Wendy, you got a big "discussion"going when i showed josie those pics of your parent birds, LOL. She's still going off. I told her i'd give 1500 for an 6wk old parented raised baby.
I know of another pair very similar, for 3000 i could have a breeding pair in 8=10 yrs. .... Nahhh, i'll stick with what i got. Not much fun out there in the "dog house".
